Here's a Colgate kid who's returning for her junior year....

First off, definitely check out Colgate as other posters have said. I will emphasize that your D must check out the upperclassmen, not just the freshmen. I find that Colgate kids tend to enter with similiar styles but leave in their own unique fashion/behavior patterns. The campus is fairly large enough for students to construct and to express their own selves. There are quite few urban kids who have come to love Colgate because they took advantage of everything that it has to offer to keep them totally occupied that their cities once did for them. I have asked why did they want to leave their cities if they love it so much and they all told me that they were drawn to the beauty of upstate NY and wanted a chance to live in this kind of green, rural environment (no pollution!) for four years.

Diversity is sorely lacking but it gets a little better each year. I know it, coming from Smith College. The administration is trying to get different student groups to collaborate with each other.

No, the students do not generally feel entitled when it comes to wealth. If anything, it's a taboo and looked down upon. No one drives a Mercedes! Only very few BMWs and Audis and every other car is your regular $15K-$25K Japanese/VW/domestic. We must stick to those that can handle the snow.

Drinking culture is huge- top 10 in Princeton Review's "Tons of Beer" list. Can't quite avoid it but there are other things going on campus like movies, music, film, and dance shows that keeps non-drinkers occupied. Yes, the classmates will discuss beer pong and jello shots and it does get annoying (for me at least- isn't there anything else to talk about?!) but I put up with it.

In a related note, Greek scene is large but not quite dominant as some perceive it to be. Some people chose to be walking advertisments for their Greek organization and others choose to stay quiet. We don't exclude the non-Greeks from our friendship circles, in fact, my sorority encourages branching out. Frats are frats but the parties can get quite lame. Apartment parties are better. Unlike Bucknell, Colgate has greater "control" over the Greek scene so it will be liable for the students.

It's possible to find a niche at Colgate- just need to look a little hard but the students here are so friendly and outgoing that through a zillion different involuntary introductions, she'll find her own circle of friends.

Who knows, maybe your "urban" daughter will want to experience a totally different scene!
