Extracurriculars:

In 2009 founded an NPO to help the Eden Orphanage in Haiti. Organization has become increasingly important since the earthquake/ cholera epidemic. Funding to rebuild school/ general aid comes from the Red Cross and UNICEF. The issue is close to me because I have extended relatives in Haiti.

founded Classics Club and French Club at my school

Model United Nations, President; 2 National Awards; 3 State Awards

NHS

Eucharistic Minister at local church

I swim on JV team, but not well

Essays: Common App essay is about my experience fouding NPO and my visit to the orphanage in 2008 that inspired me to do something
The activity essay is about Model UN and how my involvement has helped me realize what I want to do in life: work as a diplomat for the UN.

ANY comments (however brutal) are welcome. I really don't know what I'm doing because my school has an awful guidance program. SO bad- as in I didnt find out what ED was until October 15- too late for me to write a thoughtful application anywhere.

You have a great application. Your academics are very strong, and you can definitely make yourself sound like an interesting person with all your travels and such. However, you are lacking a little on the EC front (besides founding NPO). You have a great shot though, good luck!

I have to agree with NCBoy1, your application is great. Your standardized test scores are up to par with Duke’s standards, and founding that organization for Haiti makes your application stand out. Just make sure your essays show your personality and who you really are. I would suggest that if you are unsure about any part of them, have a close teacher or adult look over them.
Overall, your application seems like it would stand a good chance in the RD round, but remember, the college admissions process is a crapshoot. You never know what can happen, and who can get in.
Best of luck to you, and I hope to see you at Duke next fall!

Looks like you took a little of an ‘easy’ route in school, taking French, Italian & Latin … with your background? That’s a piece of cake!!!

You look a little like my son … he made a 5 in German AP even though the school didn’t offer German - we had lived in Germany for a while and he went to first grade there …

No - seriously now: your test scores are right where they have to be for Duke, only your GPA looks maybe a little low. Your life experience makes you quite interesting for ANY school, and your EC should do the rest.

You seem to be quite the ‘interesting’ person that colleges are looking for - the only question is: Could you make this clear in your essays?

Good luck! I think you have a good chance at Duke! (My son, btw, was accepted at Duke last year, but chose to go somewhere else)

"Are you just looking for attention/praise? Or are you actually asking a dumb question like that?

You and I (and everybody here) both know that admissions won’t laugh at you. Sure, there’s a good chance you won’t get in (its like that for everyone), but just because you get rejected from a school doesn’t mean their admissions people laugh at you. There just isn’t enough room for all the qualified people there so they have to reject a lot of them."

The fact that you think would post something like that is quite offensive considering there are many applicants with stats no where near as strong as your’s. Please stop being so inconsiderate.

Well, “viscaFCB” I apologize if my stats intimidate you.

Let’s be real for a moment: I have 3.5 UW gpa. If that doesn’t warrant a doubt- I don’t know what does. So please don’t criticize my concern.

Since you seem to be following my other threads, you’ll have read that my sister was rejected from many top schools a few years ago. She now attends a non-ivy league Tier 1 school.

Obviously, since she’s my sister, we have the same background and similar numbers. One exception: she had perfect SAT scores (yeah, 2400). The NPO I founded was in partnership with her and our cousin. So, she pretty much had my “interesting story” plus better scores.

Can you begin to see why I’m worried? I’d hope so.

There’s no reason why an outstanding applicant like that should be rejected from 7 Ivy League schools. But, my sister was. I’m trying to avoid whatever mistake she made.

If you have any personal issues with any of my posts, feel free to message me. I’ll gladly continue this conversation privately :)

ok chachacha, first of all, you and your sister are different people. You two are gonna write completely different essays (at least I hope so), so you both would have completely different chances. And secondly, nobody (including the people in admissions) is gonna laugh at you with these stats. You and I both know you’re qualified. Yes, you might get rejected, but like I said earlier, its only because there are too many qualified people applying to these schools. However, people might laugh at you when you keep posting dumb threads like this.

Anywho, admissions is a crapshoot. You’re qualified and thats it. Theres no knowing after that about whether or not you’re getting into Duke since they have a low acceptance rate and admissions seems almost random. So quit worrying about it and just wait til March/April when the results come out. Now instead of wasting your time (and our time) with these threads, spend more time working on your application. Doing that will actually help your chances unlike this thread.

Well if admissions laughed at his application(for applying with x stats not content), they wouldn’t really accept him.

However I would think you would be a strong applicant as you take what seems to be a challenging curriculum, are top 3-4%, have great test scores, and great ECs.

Guys, calm down. This is a legitimate thread. Scores are good, but GPA is subpar. Nothing stands out about your extracurricular. I’m not sure if you’ve visited our Common App essay forum, but a lot of people agree that too many people write about their volunteering experiences. I also hear this from college essay writing webinars. STAND OUT- don’t follow the pack.

But…since you are a First-gen student, you have a shot. But, I wouldn’t be surprised if you got rejected either.

You’ll get a sense of how many applicants (20,000+) will be vying for about 1000 spots. I think anyone can do the math from there. Anyone’s chances, no matter how strong of an applicant, looks pretty slim.

So the only thing you can do at this point is to make sure your essay stands out. Best of luck!

Well I guess you can’t do much about your essays now, but I would definitely look over them and/or contemplate your essay topic. Your stats/story seemed extremely interesting, but your essay topics seemed extremely uninteresting. The essay about founding your npo seems like it could be a legitimately great essay, but i’m not sure if you’d like to write about how model UN has inspired your choice of occupation; this could most likely change, and many admissions officers are probably reading similar stories. I’m sure you’ll do fine with your application :)
