I am taking 5 other AP tests this year, so I am thinking about not taking the AP Music Theory Test as I do not plan to major in music in college.
I know it would look better just to have another high scoring AP test, but I am not positive I can score a 4 or 5, especially since I have so many other test to be studying for. So I am wondering if it really matters whether I take the test or not? (Would I be less eligible for scholarships, awards, etc.)

A test like AP Music theory will not raise doubts if you do not take it. If you took AP Calculus and didn’t take the test then there might be a slight question, but not much at all. In all cases, it does not affect your eligibility for scholarships or awards (other than AP awards).

Truth be told, Brown will not even know if you don’t take the test, unless you are not a senior. The AP tests are given and scored long after the admission decisions are in. Even if you are a junior, you don’t have to report the scores to any schools, if you choose not to. The thing that schools look at is the transcript, which will reflect your school grades and the courses you took in HS. Brown, and many other schools, use the AP scores for placement, not for admission.

I think they use them for admission fireandrain.

Yeah, I don’t see the point in paying a lot of money to take exams that are automatically not considered for credit?

Such as AP Lit and AP Gov?

^ I didn’t think they used them for admission. . .

I don’t think so either, based on my D’s experience. Even though she took four exams (2 junior year and 2 senior year-- that’s all her school offered), she did not report any of the scores to Brown, and was admitted RD three years ago.

I don’t think they are “required” for admission either (perhaps considered). When I applied, I said I planned to take quite a few AP tests, but I ended up not taking any of them mainly for financial concerns but also because Brown doesn’t even offer credit for them (I still took those respective classes though).

Since Brown doesn’t offer merit scholarships/awards, this isn’t an issue. I’m not an expert on merit scholarships offered by other colleges, so I don’t know if AP results are a factor for those.

You self report AP exam scores to Brown – the only college that needs to receive the score report from the College Board is the college you end up attending. So if you don’t take this exam, especially since it’s not a core academic subject, I don’t think it matters for admission purposes.
