Would doing well on a few AP exams make up for not taking many AP classes?

Would doing very well on a few AP exams help make up for a lack of AP classes?

I'm a junior now and I'm not taking any AP classes right now, just "college prep" classes. I'm going to take a couple of AP classes next year. I was wondering, if I self studied, took a few AP exams and did well on them would that be enough to help make up for the fact I haven't been taking AP classes? I know that it still wouldn't be as good but would really selective colleges be more likely to select me if I were to do that? Thanks

Well, depending on the AP exam you take, you can get college credit and usually skip the first course (but it also depends on the college). However, to be able to get college credit, you have to get a 5 or minimum of a 4.

It would be smart to take the AP exam that is relevant to your college prep class that you are taking, just remember, these exams are challenging and for most people, require quite a bit of studying. (Invest in 1-3 review books and study them inside out and you should be fine. Do note that that tactic does not work for everyone)

If you did not take any AP classes colleges will be able to see that. To make up for lack of AP, colleges expect that you are either taken Honors or IB courses. Basically, they want to see you take on a heavy course-load and do well.

Whether it increases your acceptance rate, who can say. It may make your application more appealing and possibly increase you chances. But then again, colleges don’t just look at AP scores. (What colleges do you have in mind?)

Summary: Take the exams if you feel like you can get a good mark on it.

definitively take the exams, so worth it!
