Would Dual Majoring in Chemical Engineering & Sociology be to 'Ludicrous'?

I would LOVE to receive a Bachelors in both Chemical Engineering & Sociology because their both very broad Majors and I feel like I would learn about a little bit of everything.

My question is, would it be too ludicrous to expect to finish within 6 years?

Would there be some sort of barrier between me and my goals?

Why would you want to spend 6 years as an undergraduate? You have posted many, many variants of ‘can I / should I major/double major in this or that’.

Bluntly, the biggest barrier between you and your goals right now is that you do not have any actual goals (at least, not that you have articulated here: feeling as if you would like to learn a little about everything is not actually a goal).

You don’t actually know what you would love, b/c you don’t have enough information. Get yourself admitted to the program that is the highest barrier- engineering- and then take electives in the other subjects that you are interested in. THEN decide whether to double major or minor or whatever.

To answer the main question, no, it wouldn’t be ludicrous, and I doubt it would take you 6 years to finish. It could, depending on the college, but it might not. I’d explore schools where engineering double majors are more common.

To expand a bit, though, I think you’re making some incorrect assumptions about the majors. Sociology isn’t a particularly broad major - not any more or less broad than any other liberal arts & sciences major - and chemical engineering is a fairly specific major.

The good news, though, is that most college curricula are already designed for you to learn a little bit of everything. Your major classes only take up around 1/3 of your coursework (the average major requires about 40 hours out of a total 120; an engineering major will require more hours). The rest of that coursework is spent fulfilling general education and divisional requirements as well as taking electives. You could major in engineering and minor in sociology, or you could just major in engineering (or sociology or biochemistry or any of the other majors you are interested in) and take classes in other areas to learn a bit about everything. You don’t have to major in something to learn about it.

Also, learning a little bit about everything is certainly a goal. It’s just not a very concrete one. But that’s okay, because you’re what, 17?
