Hi I am going to be a high school sophmore next year and I am thinking about going on Rotary Youth Exchange as a junior. I am 2nd in my class rank and don't know whether I would be allowed to be valedictorian or salutatorian if I do leave for a year. Please give opinions.

“Will it help” – as compared to what? Anything that is meaningful to a student and enhances your understanding of the world and your quest for knowledge is useful. This can be done abroad, this can be done in over the grille at the local hamburger joint this summer. Travel, in and of itself is non-consequential.

Don’t go abroad if your reason is to help you get into yale. T26E4 is completely right that travel is inconsequential, it’s what you do wherever you are.

And furthermore traveling abroad for college purposes is a poor choice, you’ll only come to regret it if you choose whether to stay or go based off of your desire to get into a good college. No matter which you choose you’ll have plenty of oppurtunities to do things that will enhance your chances at Yale, and any other colelge.

You’re thinking about it wrong. Experiences make you a better person, and that helps you get into college. Go for the experience. It’ll help you get in, but probably not as a line on your application.

yeah, like i plan to go volunteer abroad in latin america next summer. but im not doing it for my college app. I’m doing it because I have a genuine interest in spanish and latin american culture. I think it’ll be a fun experience for me, and I will probably talk about it in my essay, however I’m not going there to pad my college app.

Ok, well thanks. I guess I expressed myself incorrectly - I really want to go on foreign exchange, I’d love to experience a new culture, and I’d probably do it anyways even if it didn’t help. I was just wondering if it would.

Essays about travel broad is strongly discouraged because literally thousands of applicants will have the same topic.
