Would I get into Utah's BME major?

I am applying to colleges this fall and really want to go to University of Utah. I am just having trouble deciding what major to apply to. I have narrowed it down to 3 majors.

White female from Texas
GPA: 3.95
ACT: 31 R:36 E:29 M:29 S:30
Take all honors and 5 duel enrollment classes with ASU

Biology- I want to go to med school so this would be the easiest route, but if I decided to not go to med school theres not very good job outlooks with bio.

Mathematics- I’ve always been good at math and have all A’s in those classes. I genuinely like it too.

Biomedical Engineering- The program seems very interesting and something I’d enjoy, but I don’t want to risk not getting in because I know engineering is really competitive.

What would be my chances in getting into the biomedical engineering program?

I like The U a lot, and think there’s a high likelihood that you’d get in regardless of which of the three you chose, probably with some merit money.

That said, I’m not sure I’d choose any of those majors. All three would likely require an advanced degree to get a decent job. BME in particular is quite hard. You don’t want your Plan B to risk your chance of Plan A.

If it were me, I’d chose a derivative of math (no pun intended ) like Data Science or Quantitive Analysis. You’d have to see if you could get your pre-requisites in with either. Or, you could plan a year of post-bac where you also do research or work/volunteer in the hospital. A Bachelor of University Studies where you make your own major is another option. You could make Quantitative Analysis more robust by sort of hybridizing the two while leaving room for pre-requisites.

Just a thought. Good luck!

Remember that there are two routes into BME: direct admit and once you are there (which requires a 3.4 in key courses, see https://www.bme.utah.edu/documents/2019/07/undergraduate-handbook.pdf/#page6 ).

You are definitely going to get in to the U, and I see no issue with applying for BME since if you don’t get direct admit (which I’d guess is 50/50 at best) you will just be pre-BME and you can decide which major to pursue once you are there and take some math and science classes.
