I dont really follow Marsdens train of thought here. I think starting a nonprofit has potential to be a fantastic hook. Especially if you grow it into something real and get some praise from your community for it.

I actually think if your extracurriculars are set up the way you have them listed now youll stand a great chance. Keep in mind everyone looks for something different–some ivies want great, well rounded kids, and others want kids who truly excell in a certain category.

Be yourself. Don’t chase activities to spruce up your resume. Chase things you love.

Apply and don’t count on getting in because it’s more of a lottery these days for kids who don’t have major hooks like being super athlete, minority, rich donor. That’s life. You’ll be fine wherever.

Thank you, all of you! Hey MSauce- do you know any resources for starting a successful nonprofit? I’ve been looking for a while…Hopefully, I can find a mentor at my internship or summer program.

Starting a non-profit is a huge project. I have no clue how you would go about it, but you’d want to find somewhere to draw resources from.

If your interests are in your community, I’d personally say run for school board on the campaign that you bring the perspective of a current student. That wouldn’t be completely original, but is a pretty rare hook regardless.

Drawing resources… do you mean, advice or funds ?
That’s an awesome idea! I’ve never heard of any kid doing that… don’t have you have to be 18 to run for a position on a board? I’m a little confused by what you mean.

@ctgirl628 I definitely agree with Marsden. Your profile suggest that you have a predisposition for literary studies. This would make you a really good candidate for a liberal arts college, of which there are many brilliant ones in the States. Your involvement with environmental activities also corroborates this.

Some schools to look at (some have already been named):

-Amherst
-Williams
-Swarthmore
-Reed
-Pomona
-Oberlin
-Sarah Lawrence
-Wellesley
-Wesleyan
-Bowdoin
and lots more, I’m sure.
