Well im a ninth grader and i wanted to study petroleum engineering at university level because of its high potential and amazing salary…but after checking some forums i figured out that even ChemEs are hired as petEs and it is beneficial to students as after studying chemical engineering they can go into both kinda of jobs reducing risk of unemployment…then again some say chemEs generally do not get the upstream jobs of the oil and gas sectors as petroleum engineers…and also i found out that the top universities of the world offers mostly chemical engineering degrees…only a few offers petroleum masters and even fewer offers bachelors…so i have taken the idea of studying chemE at B.sc level and Pet.E at M.sc level in to consideration. I want to know if this is a right decision. Will i be able to work at upstream or the higher ranked petroleum engineering levels specially as a reservoir engineer as that job is less complicated than drilling engineering and also offers less work off shore. Please give a detailed correct answer as its a decision for my career and life. …and one more thing…the tuition fees are way to much for me as im from Bangladesh and though i have above average or should i say pretty good highschool results but still it is tough for my parents to take a risk and send me to us schools as if im not offered financial aids then i wouldnt possibly be able to pay 60k usd a year if i dont take a loan…loan will be the last option for us…in the mean time ive chosen NU Singapore as it is quite cheaper and also offers more chances of financial aids…is it a good decision ? how good employer reputation does it have ?
I have a son in a top PetE program and a husband who works for a large oil services company (has a petroleum engineering degree). I ask my husband the same thing about hedging bets and getting a ChemE or MechE degree since oil and gas companies do hire them. He tells me when his company hires petroleum engineers, they first look to the PetE majors and will pay them more for their knowledge. They will also interview other majors, too, but it is not their first choice. Drilling engineers have a more physical job and the least level of abstraction compared to the reservoir engineers who deal more with computer models. It’s great you are getting information to make a decision. I would also talk to advisors at colleges and people in the field. It is a specialized field.
then would i get the more paid ones if i go for a bsc in chem E and msc in petE?
I can’t answer if you would get paid more. I’m sure there is a premium on a masters in PetE. I will say that a bachelors in PetE is sufficient for the job market. Getting your masters will, of course, differentiate you if its important in your studies.
so what would be your opinion for my decision regarding bsc in chem# and msc in PetE? remember i really wanna be a PetEngineer (preferably reservoir) … i dont wanna be a ChemE but as i have already told u i cant take the risk of being unemployed or get less paid on works…thanx in advance…
Unemployment is a concern in that field. Where will you eventually live? Bangladesh?
well no …i really love my country but id like to work and live in USA to give my parents a good life…
