Would it be feasible to take the pre-med and pre-pharm courses?

From the schools i have checked so far (UCSF, UCI, UCLA) about medical school or pharmacy school, the pre-requisites seem pretty similar, give or take a few courses/units.

Has anyone done this?

Thanks ahead to anyone who answers!

Neither pharmacy nor medical schools require a specific undergraduate major for admissions. (I know a music major who was admitted to med school.) Their only requirement is that certain courses must be taken and successfully completed (along with test results, GPA and letters of recommendation, etc). IIRC, pharmacy programs generally have more courses specified as pre-requisites than med schools. And yes, many of these mandated courses are the same for both med and pharmacy schools. There’s nothing wrong with keeping your options open as you begin your undergraduate studies.

If you haven’t decided what route to take by your junior year, your difficulties will develop, such as studying for and taking both the MCAT and PCAT and explaining to prospective professional programs why you should be considered a serious candidate for their program if, in their minds, you appear to be unable to focus on a single career. In addition, programs require letters of recommendation and in many schools that requires a committee letter, which might be an issue if you’re applying to both programs. No pharm school or med school wants to be thought of as a fall-back option.

I realize that. I wasn’t talking about a specific major; I was just talking about the necessary classes for pre-meds and pre-pharms.

I’ll choose by sophomore/junior year for sure, but I just wanted to see if it would be possible to balance the classes for both until then.

Try asking your counselor

There will probably be a lot of overlap between classes for pre-med vs. pre-pharm, so as long as you’re a good student it shouldn’t be a problem. By the time I finished my pharmacy pre-reqs I had also covered all of the pre-med requirements as well. Pharmacy schools’ requirements vary, so efinitely check out several pharmD programs’ pre-req requirements to get an idea of what classes to take.

As Magico said, your counselor should have some good resources for you. My undergrad had pre-med/vet/pharm/etc. “worksheets” that helped spell out which classes to take.

I actually completed my school’s “pre-vet” requirements and am currently in pharmacy school.

Every pharm/med school website has a set list of pre-req’s they require but it’s all pretty standard with a change in a course here & there (like most school’s require the basic sciences but only a few school’s require stats or advanced biochem).

good luck! :)

@starrynight20, thanks for the info! Did you do pharmacy internships/volunteering?
