I am thinking about applying to LU next year but I am worried about all the the music genius types. I play in my school band and am decent but nowhere near conservatory level. Would I be an odd peson out?

I am visiting Lawrence tomorrow and am not a music genius either, so I'll keep your question in mind while on campus. I'll be back by Friday, or I'll post from the library there, and give you my impressions then.

That would be great--thanks!

Okay, so here goes. According to admissions, 82% of Lawerence students choose to major in something other than music; however, most of the non-music majors I talked to did play at least one instrument well and seemed to be pretty dedicated to it. That being said, I definitely think someone who isn't really into music would still be accepted and respected at Lawrence; there were so many non-music related events going on during my stay and very few of the conversations I had or overheard revolved around music. People there seemed to have other interests and were more than happy to talk about those.

Depending on whom you talk to, there might be somewhat of a split between the conservatory students and the non-conservatory ones. One girl I talked to said that the con students (I'm paraphrasing here) "wish they could just hang like we do" and that they "spend a lot of time gazing longingly" at the non-conservatory section of campus across the road (a rather busy road runs through campus and splits the music buildings from the regular liberal arts ones). Other students, however, including my host, said no such split exists; it seems to be just a matter of opinion, and for my part, all of the con students I talked to were very friendly and open and certainly not cloistered away in practice rooms across the road.

So, yes, I think someone who isn't a music genius would certainly fit in on that one aspect.

kate, do you mean fitting in socially, or fitting in as in getting to play your instrument in some ensemble at LU? Are you intending to apply to the conservatory or to the BA pgm?

izzy, did you get a sense of the pct at LU who participate music who are not connies? Pres beck at the LSO recital in chicago said that there are 15 non music majors in the 100 person LSO.
