I really really really want to study abroad. But, I'm not sure if I should. I was planning to study abroad in Costa Rica (I'm an env. science major and Latin American & Caribbean studies minor), but I just found out I can't take all of the classes I was planning to. I can only satisfy 2 major req's instead of 5 like i originally thought, so it doesn't look like it will fit into my schedule very well. When I found that out I looked into studying abroad in Australia, but I can't afford it, unless I get a ton of scholarships. Do you think I should just not study abroad and get fulfill my travel desires elsewhere? Or should I still try to study abroad?

Nope it doesn’t look like a good fit for you. Why not just take the extra money and go on vacation for a few weeks?

I went on a program focused on the environment and sustainability in Australia this past summer. It was through AUIP–the Northern Queensland program. It was the best experience of my college career so far! Studying abroad is expensive, no matter where you go. Look into scholarships offered by your school as well as by third parties. You can also try to fundraise by hosting a dinner, sending letters to businesses and family/friends, or talking to local restaurants about their fundraising options. I was able to pay for my trip with scholarships and student loans. I really believe that everyone who wants to should study abroad while in college; it is an unforgettable experience and I learned so much! Let me know if you have any specific questions about Australia or the program I did, I’d be more than happy to talk to you about it. Good luck!
