Would these majors/minors work?

Hey this is my first post on CC so be easy on me :) But I am going to be a junior in HS and going to be looking at colleges/majors. What really interests me is teaching music or theater and having option to do music therapy. I have a couple of options:

1) Double major with Music Ed and masters in Music Therapy
2) To do an undergrad in Music Ed and a minor in theater with a masters in Music Therapy
3) Give up and send application to nearest McDonalds

But seriously which option would be the best and if you have other ideas that would be great!
Thanks!

Both will work ultimately, although option one isn’t actually a ‘double major’…It is just doing a Master’s after your Bachelor’s.

Either way, have fun…

Both music ed and theater are intense majors. Teaching the two are different curriculum and auditions. Which interests you more? Not sure how many places allow a theater minor. There is a theater forum here on cc that may be able to answer that. You should talk to a school that iterests you to see if it could be feasible. It may well take longer than 4 years.

I think your question is a little unclear, so if you could tell us a little more maybe you could get more help.

The only difference between #1 and #2, from what you have written, is the theater minor in #2. Otherwise you have an undergrad major in music ed and a master’s in music therapy as options, is that right? What do you mean by “double major” in #1. Music ed and what else?

You can go to school and take classes in freshman year that might help you decide where to focus. There are some schools that you could consider where you don’t have to focus at all, but can do interdisciplinary work (Bennington is one I know of, where you can do music and theater and somehow connect them) but they tend not to have music or theater ed. You could do music or theater ed or music therapy on the grad level and just study what you want on the undergrad level. Exploring before specializing is good for many, especially if you are undecided.

You still have two years of high school. Things can change and get clearer (or less clear!). I suggest that you continue exploring music and theater (and teaching or working with kids if you are doing that) and whatever else interests you. When the time comes, you can always apply to a variety of schools, covering all possible options, and then decide in April of senior year.

Lesley University in Cambridge MA might interest you. It is good for theater, and has expressive arts therapy degrees on the undergraduate level, including both music and theater.

Generally speaking, music ed programs to not have room for a lot of elective credits. Therefore double majors and/or minors are difficult for music ed majors (but not undoable). There is a fair amount of overlap in the course required for music ed and performance and therefore a number of schools do have this double major - but often requiring an extra semester or an extra year to complete the degree program.

Those combination of degree programs sound wonderful, but you need to put some time into looking at different schools and seeing if they have the combination of programs you are interested in. Some schools are more flexible than others when it comes to working with students who are looking for unique programs. If you find a school you like which has the degree programs you are looking for, you can contact the school to as if the double major or major/minor program is an option, if you cannot find the information on the website.

Good luck!
