Would this ever happen in college admisisons? (legacy/race/etc.)

With the upcoming Fischer vs. Texas case in the news, would it be possible for the federal government to someday decide to cut off ALL federal research funding to colleges that practice legacy admissions, give preference to people because of their race, etc.?

The government can't dictate which students private colleges choose to accept. But would it be possible for them to cut funding for schools that have legacy/racial preferences?

Your hypothetical is so far fetched as to not even come close to the issues at hand in Fischer v. Texas. Private colleges can practice what they want. Unless it’s something blatantly racist like one college still condones, what you’re proposing is simply paranoia.

That is not a correct statement of the law, on multiple grounds.

The federal government threatened to cut off all transportation aid to states that did not raise their drinking age to 21. All the states did. During the gas crisis, it threatened to cut off all transportation aid to states that did not lower its speed limit to 55. All the states did, and it’s only relatively recently that the speed limits have increased again.

Your hypothetical, while unlikely, is quite possible, and quite legal.
