Would y'all mind helping me? chances :D

Hello, all! I'm a midwestern boy who has his heart set on dartmouth (but cant apply ED, say parents) I'd appreciate any constructive criticism you could give me.

Background:
white, male, upper middle-income midwesterner

Academics:
SAT: 800 M, 770 CR, 740 W (2310)
SAT subjects: 800 math II, 790 bio-m, 790 world history
GPA: 4.5 (weighted, straight As)
Rank: N/A, but top 5 or 10 students out of ~300

Awards: NMSF, AP scholar with distinction, national academic tournament finalist, nothing else big

ECs:
Mayor's youth council (last 2 years)
Habitat for Humanity (pres.)
Varsity Soccer team (captain)
Varsity Rowing team (captain, but not good enough to be recruited)
Class Officer (all 4 years)
Academic Team (captain)
NHS (officer)
children's Museum volunteer (all 4 years)

Other:
School type: pretty competitive parochial, but the only kids we send to ivies are athletes. send about 10 a year to notre dame though
Applying for financial aid? Yes
Teacher recs: absolutely fantastic
Counselor rec: she loves me, but she's not the strongest writer (will that reflect negatively on me or the school?)
Peer eval: beautifully written, but doesnt stand out or anything
essays: good, but prob the weakest part of app
Intended major: Poly sci and spanish

I also did a total immersion program in spain this summer, and i'm probably going to have one of my teachers write a supplemental rec....would this be preceived as too many?

Please let me know how else i can stand out, and what my chances are at Dartmouth!!!

Thanks in advance

bump bump bump anything?

Judging by the results I’ve seen, I’d say up to 4 recs in addition to the GC is fine, BUT the extra ones should preferably be from some aspect of your life other than the classroom: an EC, work, etc. The justification for sending them is that they may reveal something about you not covered by the first two teachers.

Why can’t you apply ED?

Thanks for the response!

My supplemental rec would talk about the program i did, because i didnt really explain it thoroughly in the common app.

And I can’t apply ED because we need to compare aid packages, plus if by some anomalous miracle i got into HYP. lame i know, but hey, what can you do?

Obviously your heart isn’t so set on D…:)

haha no believe me it is! But if i got into harvard, princeton, or yale, that might be a game changer. i’m trying to be semi-realistic, even though dartmouth is still a huge reach…isn’t it?

Then your heart isn’t set on Dartmouth.

I guess I should have been more explicit…

I LOVE dartmouth, and consider it my “realitist” number one choice. While I know that it is still RIDICULOUSLY competitive and that I am by NO means guaranteed a spot, i also recognize that it is easier to get accepted to D than to HYP. I am applying to those three that by some off-the-wall miracle i would get accepted, then i would pay more attention to those schools.

in other words, i dont want to get my hopes up for somthing very unlikely. does that clear the air?

in other news, is there any part of my app that requires help?!

yeah. i’m applying ED somewhere, but if i get into HYP instead, i would FOR SURE choose HYP… even though the school i’m applying ED to is one that i absolutely love and is definitely my first choice, realistically speaking.

what mickjagger said haha

^^Glad to know I’m in good company.

So, does anybody have further advice about my application?

If you apply ED somewhere you won’t be going to HYP even if you get in because you will be obligated to go to the ED school. That’s what ED means. Failing to withdraw your application to HYP or any other school after an ED acceptance can get you rescinded at your ED school and disqualified at the others. You need the cooperation of your HS to complete your applications, so don’t think you can get away with this and no one will know.

If, on the other hand, you are talking about EA applications, that’s another matter. But Dartmouth is ED, not EA.

Ummm, I think he was being hypothetical. As in, he IS doing ED in real life, but if he wasn’t doing ED, and applied to HYP and got in, he would go to HYP.

Don’t worry, I was pretty confused by his post too, and had to read it three times.

I hope so.
