Whatever the result- score/not taking it- be philosophical about it. It was meant to be. She should have no regrets regardless of what happens. She needs to feel your support (and love) when it comes to which college she attends for financial reasons. My son has a similar tale in his ancient history HS past. His was SAT math- retook the regular SAT instead of repeating it. Seeing how his life has played out to date (now in his mid twenties) it didn’t matter.
Thank you all so much for your input. She has decided to try one more time. She doesn’t find the thought of taking it overly stressful, and she does not have any commitments for that Saturday. I told her that, in my opinion, it couldn’t hurt to give it one last shot if she really thought there was a chance of getting what she needs. I also told her that it was OK with me if she didn’t think it was realistically worth doing.
If she got the extra money, she would absolutely attend this school. It’s still a possibility with the award she has now, but not a given.
I do appreciate your help. In my gut I wanted to recommend that she take it again, but I didn’t want to push her into it. After hearing your opinions, I didn’t feel bad about saying that I thought it was worth a shot. Even posters who would not suggest a retake seemed to indicate that the decision was really based on knowing your kid. I know that it won’t freak her out to take it again unless I make it a huge deal. So she’s going to review some CR strategies and do some practices beforehand, but we’re not going into this as though her future is riding on this one test. Because it isn’t!
Good luck to her! Has she tried going through som xiggi target practice? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/68210-xiggis-sat-prep-advice.html
I would let the kid to do whatever she wants to do. However, my requirement would be that if she decided to re-take, then she should spend considerable amount of time preparing and taking the practice tests to see if her score improves in comparison to previous practice tests. Do not compare to the real score as normally the practice score is higher than real score. If score does not improve, I do not see any point of re-taking.
It sounds like she made the call for herself, which is good. I don’t usually recommend taking the SAT or any other test multiple times, but in your daughter’s case, there is significant money riding on it, so this sounds like the right thing to do.
