Would you cite that a kid has been published

Daughter who is still in high school did a summer research project on a very important study funded by private industry, professor is very happy and praised her effor. In technical conference at Harvrad, he is presenting a paper and citing daughter as a contributor alongwith other Phd students team. My question is if the published paper has her name including the highschool among the contributor, can she claim this significant achievement that she has a published paper under her belt. Thanks

Of course. Obviously though, the AO will recognize that she is not the first author, and they will assume that her contributions are in line with where she places on the list of co-authors.

Yes she is not the first author. And she just won a major scholarship based on the work that she did last summer research. Yesterday she presented her research work to the privaye entity that funded the project. They have offered her a summer research position in the company lab for 11th grade if she choose to do or provide funding if she continue her work in the same lab.

From an AO perspective, that is more interesting, IMO. Good luck to her.

She is co author, so she should claim being co author. Thanks

Understood. My point was that not all co-authors are created equal. Being listed second will be perceived differently than being listed 20th, for example.

Being listed as a co-author at all while still in high school is a huge accomplishment. Many students don’t even do that until they are grad students already. My daughter worked on a research project in a government lab one summer in high school, but they didn’t bother to list her when they published the work. This is a great honor for your daughter! Love that she can intern at the company’s lab one day, too. Congrats to her!

That is generally not considered to be a co author but an acknowledgement. Ask the professor about his intentions.

Also any school is going to ask what she did. Did she spend hundreds of hours on it and wrote part of it or did she do something much less?

@collegedad13 I sent you a PM. sorry I have to delete my response it as I do not want to reveal our identity.

Also… a presentation does not always include a paper. A paper is a more rigorous, peer reviewed thing than a presentation. My D2 will be an author (but not first author) on a paper being published by one of the national labs later this year, It has been in the works for a couple of years (readers have had been done, but writing/publishing is slow).

But I’d say your D should include these accomplishments – but she needs to describe them accurately. She can ask the prof she worked with to review what she wants to say about it for accuracy. D2 did this with her research profs for her CV to make sure she didn’t overstep in her descriptions when applying to grad schools, and they were happy to provide feedback.

That is why I am asking questions here; but I made a mistake, I should have not asked this question in public forum. Is there a way to delete this thread, I will ask daughter to ask the professor how should she write it out in CV without exaggerating her work.

Moderators, @skieurope Is there a way to delete or edit this thread? Thanks in advance. I would like to protect our privacy.

No. Terms of Service is clear on that subject. I have closed the thread, so it will soon disappear to the back pages.
