nil desperandum, it’s okay, let people say what they want about affirmative action. maybe it comes off as racist? yes. do I let that bother me? nope.

nil desperandum,

If everyone just ignored all the injustices around then nothing would EVER get changed. Affirmative action is a hot topic now, and that’s good because it increases the chance that sometime in the future something will be done about it. But yes, I agree that we should all focus on our own situations foremost, since it’s highly unlikely AA will change before we apply to colleges. It shouldn’t be a personal rage/brooding thing… just the same as speaking our opinions on any political topic online.

the thing I don’t get about AA is this: why do colleges base AA on race? While, yes, the average African American teenager doesn’t have as many resources as a Caucasian teenager might, this is more a result of socioeconomic status than anything else (like skin color). I support a system of AA based upon income, which overall is alot more equitable than racial AA (think about the poor, disadvantaged asian teens).

Unfortunately, here’s the ugly reality: colleges don’t want to tick off the rich folks, from whom they get millions in donations.

Yes I agree. I think socioeconomic AA would come MUCH closer to the desired effects of AA than racial AA does-- 1) giving educationally disadvantaged kids a leg up and 2) increasing diversity of culture.
