Wow...the road has come to an end

hey all,

So basically in high school, i spent my time doing cutting edge research at a lab (which was published). this took up a lot of time and thus my high school record wasn't too great...this didn't carry over too well for the admission officers and so I got rejected from most of the places applied too...

At college, my first semester ended VERY badly...a combination of family deaths, problems with people all hindered me from doing my work. So far this semester my gpa has been a solid 3.5. If i keep up this performance next semester in addition to a summer semester my gpa will be about 3.5-3.6

so here's the story:

Major: molecular biology

will apply for junior standing as a transfer.

hs gpa: <2.5

college gpa: indeterminate

ec's: research publication (working on another one in college), speech and debate team, tennis team

college ec's: research, international students organization, cricket club, member of college's investment group.

My dream school has always been Cornell, now sadly i have no chance at getting in. I also wanted to apply to other top 20+ uni's i realize now that I have no chance at them. If anyone has any suggestions for decent universities to look into, I would greatly appreciate it. I feel terrible about losing my second chance to get into Cornell and other schools and am starting to go into a depression. I feel that if I don't address this soon, I will keep screwing my life up...

I think you should apply to cornell anyway. the application won’t take THAT much time, and if you explain what you just explained to us maybe it will be worth a shot.

I’d recommend some top tier schools that do not review upon your high school academic background so heavily. Maybe I can help you find some universities.

Can you please list me which state you reside in, are you okay being an out of state student, and are you in need of financial aid?

off the top of my head UCSD and UNC Chapel Hill come to my mind for Bio.

@ MakeBank:

I am a resident of New York, and distance is no issue for me. I was also considering uni’s such as Rice and Berkeley, but now its clear that i have no chance so i took of my list. any help in finding a good uni for me would be appreciated.

go to a CCC then transferto berkeley hehe. i paid 1123098123098 dollars oos at a CCC, not to transfer to berkeley, but it just ended up that way (parents moved)

why do you have no chance of getting in?

well BrandNew, my high school gpa was just terrible, and right now im doing the best I can, but my college gpa is not looking too good either…i don’t want to pay $70 to get a rejection letter from Cornell. Reality has hit me really hard and im afraid that I need to find solace before my depression gets any worse. I have read the success stories and some of those people are my role models. However they had a good hs gpa and a good college gpa, though a I have a while i don’t think a 3.5 or a 3.6 is going to get me an admission to Cornell. So thats why i’m trying to look for good alternative schools that may not be Cornell but at least better than my current one…

uhhhhhhh i have a 3.667 and i applied… my highschool records are decent, im a member of ptk and the honors program… and while i obviously dont know if i’ll get in or not, i was already accepted to TCNJ, probably the best school in nj after princeton.

you have to have faith in yourself and whatever it is youve accomplished. 70 dollars is a lot, dont get me wrong, (i work at the mall… im broke as well), but if you don’t try, you’ll never know…

my advice is, instead of being a little girl and complaining about it, put that effort into something positive and write a killer essay or bring your grades up for when you apply next year (as the cornell fall deadlines already passed).

i dunno what other advice i can give…

im trying to salvage as much as i can BrandNew, im doing research, trying to get my grades back up and I will see where I end up when it comes time to apply. I thank and appreciate your advice and support.

I know that it may come across as whining but im just trying to find a good alternative school. im pretty sure i wont be completely happy anywhere other than Cornell, and since my chances of getting are little to none i need a good school that I can get into to condition myself to like it there. please don’t take it in the wrong sense.

however if it so happens that my gpa is somewhat competitive and that i feel like i stand a chance then i certainly will give it a shot…

Berkeley is definantly hard to get into when transferring out of state. Since top priority for transferring to UC’s are given to community college students. But there is still a chance on the other lower UC’s since they accept more than 40 out of state transfers unlike UCLA and UCB.

Maybe you can look into Purdue, UCSD, UNC at Chapel Hill. Those univerisites are well-known in the biology field. Especially UCSD.

thanks makebank, ill definetley look into those schools…any other suggestions?

any other suggestions?
