Cornell fall 2010 transfer stats

Hey guys post your stats on here for future applicants. It would help them a lot to know what range of things they need to get in.

Accepted to Cornell CALS
Biology and Society major

Cornell transfer admissions is one word in my opinion: INTEREST. If you go to a school with a transfer agreement thats sort of showing interest that you went to a college in order to go to cornell. Taking pre-reqs for your major is also interest, and a lot at that. Cornell wants to see how you do in classes that cornell would offer.

I think essays are the biggest part. They show your interest and how good of a fit you are.

STATS
High School: Rank 4/372
Weighted GPA: 5.0351
(7 Ap classes alone in my senior year, and I took 13 total in all of high school)
Unweighted H.S. GPA: 3.7193

Current school: New York University College of Arts and Science
College GPA: 3.689 (Pretty low compared to my friends here and people on cc, i took one BULLCRAP class and got a B+ since my professor was insane (ask ironicallyunsure he has mutton chops)
Midterm Report: 3.86
EC's: Research at the New York University Anthropology Lab. I worked on research analyzing pots from the Indus for chemical content. Psych club, bio and society club, american medical student association.

I had a lot for high school EC's, I was extremely involved. I had about 3 pages. I was vice president or secretary of about 10 clubs and won a scholarship in my medical science club
SAT: 2070 (710 writing, 680 math, 680 reading) BUT I DID NOT SUBMIT THEM!

ESSAYS: I made mine super detailed, they were 4-5 pages double spaced and I explained thoroughly why I was a good fit for cornell and why it was right for me. I also explained that my major was truly what I wanted to do. I made explicit descriptions and went into intense detail. I did a lot of research and looked for a lot of programs and things that would aid me and satiated my interests. I spent months editing and re-editing with a lot of help from ironicallyunsure (I hope she is still on in the future haha)

Additional: I applied early decision in high school, maybe that showed interest

I am an Indian male. I am from Florida. I applied like a day before the app was due.I either took all my pre-reqs for my major because I love cornell and wanted to do as much as I could.

Also I sent pictures of my visit with captions (about 5-6 pics with 2 sentences) to show further interest. I think that might have helped show more interest. :D

My application: I actually submitted the common app 2 hours late because i was tweaking another app. my supplement somehow got lost and i resubmitted it a week ago. my CA essay was not cornell specific, but my academic interest essay talked about doing a summer program last summer and how that changed my career plans, culminating into why cornell would be good for me. I made very clear that i was applying to CALS communication: i mentioned how i would use the topics taught in specific courses, reflected the research of a few faculty members, talked about their various summer research programs. Basically i spent an hour two researching the cornell website.
My additional info page was 3 pages long single spaced, and listed every notable thing i had done since HS junior year. I also mentioned my interest in languages and study abroad: I can speak/write german, arabic and spanish, and to a lesser extent italian and now japanese. i’m getting tutored in korean on the side starting in a week.
My CA essay was 777 words long and my cornell essay was 825 words long.

i am an international from bangladesh and did not apply for fin. aid, but tuition is like 10K a semester, so it could be worse, plus i have friend who are willing to let me room with them off campus for $300/month. i am unsure if i will go to cornell as of now, i’m waitng on some other schools and figuring out a way to finance the remainder of my undergrad.
i was originally class of 2013, but cornell accepted 60 credits, so i will onyl have to take my major classes there and then i can graduate.

i have never visited cornell (i don’t even know how upstate ithaca is lols), so if you can’t visit, make sure you know as many details about the major you want as possible. don’t be afraid to email faculty members aksing about what they do at cornell and such. i did this and it worked apparently. also, if you’re apply to cals, make sure you have as many of the prereqs as possible done. and if in doubt, just ask the adcoms about what theyre looking for.

Wow, u guys have awesome stats there! To encourage some who aren’t as good as Melonbread and Castiel…I hope my stats give others some hope : )

CALS Biological Sciences

I am an international student from Korea, and this is my fifth year studying in the states.

HS: The Bear Creek School (private school. VERY small)
My highschool did not rank, but was in top 10%
My highschool did not weigh…unweighted GPA: 3.96
6 AP classes taken, all from sophomore yr to senior yr.
(I say, it was equally distributed…oh, take account that my school did not have many options for AP classes)

Current school: Emory University
College GPA: 3.46 (It is really low compared to my hs gpa, but as a premed, i’m still having a hard time with some of college level science classes, so i guess its understandable : ) have hope people! at least for freshman, who didnt get good gpa…we’re young, its all about improvement!)
Midterm Report: 4.00 (I got lucky here, b/c I was doing really well in the beginning of the semester especially for chem, I had to ask my chem professor to put my 2nd prelim 2days after I took the test so that I could boost up my mid term grades…!)
EC’s: I haven’t done much in college yet. I tried to avoid making myself too busy before I adjusted to college life and workload. I just took flute lesson, TA for Korean class, and one club.
(But I did do a LOT of EC during hs, and I think that showed the admissions officers that I can be involved when I decide to…)

Yeah…overall, my stats are pretty low, but I think my passion for Cornell is unparalleled…(or equal to others XD) I visited Cornell the first time when my older brother was applying for colleges. I think I fell in love with the school right at that time. Nevertheless, life’s not easy …lol…I have applied to Cornell CALS bio before, waitlisted, and rejected. Even after I became a student at Emory, I still did not want to give up my dream… so I reapplied!

Compared to others, my essay was rather frank and straightforward. Neither did I have the capability to write creative and awe-inspiring essa nor proficient writing skills to express my interest. So, I just decided to put the bare minimum that would show my interest in my major and Cornell. I talked about the optimal condition I would thrive as an organism (…I compared myself to a yeast XD…cuz this was what I was doing in biolab back then…) and started listing some things that I really liked about Cornell. (of course, avoid making bad comments about your current school) I think this was a good way, since the essay focused more on the positive side than the negatives.

Anyway, its getting too long. My point is: future applicants, have hope and don’t give up!

I know more cornell acceptees, post stats!

CALS Biology and Society

HS: Rich Suburban Public (NY)
GPA: 4.0/4.0
SAT: 2360 800 M/790 V/770 W
SAT II: 800 Math IIC; 800 Physics (only submitted two, my next best was 760)
ECs: school newspaper editor, sports teams, debate, ~100 hrs/yr volunteering (modest)
Awards: National merit, AIME qualifier, National AP Scholar, debate awards
APs: 9 5s, all taken before my senior year (didn’t take any senior year, because I was accepted ED to a liberal arts college that I knew gave no credit for them)
Never applied to Cornell before

College: Top LAC
GPA: 3.8
Credits, including in progress: 76
Course taken include: Bio I and II, Intro Chem, Orgo I, Modern Physics, Applied Differentials, History, Latin, Classics, Macro I, Micro I and II
Major: Undeclared
ECs: Nothing. I sincerely disliked my college; the positions were generally in title only.
Awards: dean’s list all semesters

My application: Weak essays. I really wanted to go to Cornell, but I was unable to articulate exactly why (i.e. not because of any specific departmental strength, major offering, &c., but rather because of the University’s emergent properties). Also, my app didn’t get processed until roughly 4 business days before I got my acceptance. No financial aid, but I don’t know whether they are need-aware for transfers anyway.

hey Binulove i got into biological sciences too!! and im a korean as well, ur entering this fall right???

And the next question he will ask is…“Do you want to be starcraft buddies?”

haha, just kidding.

lols although i do wonder why starcraft is so insanely popular in korea…
