WPI vs. BU

Hello,

I’m a First-semester freshman studying physics at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I’ve just finished submitting my transfer application to both Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Boston University. I was hoping to get some feedback and opinions on what school is the best choice for me. I’ve already done plenty of research into both schools. I’m looking at WPI because I love the campus atmosphere. The location in Worcester is slightly inconvenient, but if anyone can give me information about Worcester and about things to do there, I’d appreciate it. I like a close campus like Duquesne’s, but I also like access to the city. I like the program at BU, but I also am trying to stay away from larger class sizes. I also like the idea of a project-based curriculum. If I were to transfer to WPI, I would most likely enroll in the five-year B.S./M.S. program with a masters in Electrical Engineering and a bachelor’s in robotics engineering. As for BU, I’m thinking just electrical engineering. As far as being accepted, I’m almost sure I’ll get into WPI. I interviewed with them in September, and they told me that I need to maintain a certain GPA to be accepted, since I surpassed their other requirements. As far as BU, I’m not sure what their standards are. I’m also unaware of how large the candidate pool is for transfer students, and I feel like the competitiveness could affect me. I’m very familiar with Boston, and I’ve been to Worcester several times. I have family in Worcester who have offered me a summer job, and I have other family not too far away in New york. I’m from Pittsburgh, and here is where most of my family is located. I honestly just want to get out and not remain local.

Obviously, I’ll have to wait on my admissions decisions. However, any feedback on the schools would help. In your opinion, where should I transfer to? Should I stay another semester because I can defer admission? Anyone that can provide information about each school is invited to post. Also, if you need any information regarding my opinions and preferences, please ask me and I’ll gladly post them. I’m just trying to decide which school is the best fit. Duquesne, as far as I’m concerned, isn’t, and I feel that it’s best to pursue other horizons. Thanks.

Here are my academic stats:

HS GPA: 3.8 / 4.0
HS GPA (Weighted): 4.71 / 4.0
No ACT.
SAT Scores combined are: 1910
Mid-Term GPA at Duquesne: 3.76
I have all A’s with the exception of a B+ in Chemistry 121.

I have submitted three letters of recommendation to the schools as well, and have interviewed personally with WPI admission staff. I have toured both campuses and I find WPI to be more enjoyable.

Honestly, I’m looking for reasons to not throw out BU quite yet and see if there is something that I have overlooked. I want to be sure of my decision, because I probably won’t be able to transfer again once I do this time. Financial aid, housing, and public transportation are also huge concerns. Thanks again.
