WPI Will financial aid lower my chances?

I know this might be a stupid question. But if I apply for financial aid, will it lower my chances to get into WPI? I know that WPI is a very selective schools and WPI is a reach school for me. Can someone help please? Thank you very much for your attention!

i dont think it will lower your chance. i applied for financial aid and got in

To my knowledge, WPI is a “need-based, need-blind” school. This means that they accept their students based on their applications alone, and after they are accepted, they figure out the financial aid that is needed for each applicant.

I don’t believe WPI is need-blind, there are very few schools that can afford to be.
(Not that I believe everything in Wikipedia) but WPI is listed as need-aware here: [Need-blind admission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Need-blind admission - Wikipedia)

What they probably do is base admissions decisions without regard to FA, then the FA people figure out how much it would cost to admit that pool of students. If it is beyond their FA budget, they probably replace some number of FA applicants with some non-FA applicants.

Also the answer may be different for international students at many schools…

But you need to apply for FA if you can’t afford it. No point getting in if you can’t afford to go!

Sorry to say this, but it is need-aware. I asked the admissions officers and they said they’re need aware.(Or maybe this might be just for internationals, not sure.) But although they’re need-aware, I’ve heard they give aid/scholarships generously. Also, if you’re above the 50th percentile, I don’t think you should really worry about that. Need-aware policy affects mostly those on the border of in and out. Best of luck!

Just confirming what skriptkid said

It will definitely hurt your chance. Im sorry but this is the ugly truth. However, work on your SAT and you can guarantee your chance!

Don’t not apply for financial aid due to this fact, but in some cases it would probably lower your chances.
