hi everyone, i just found out today that i have been selected for the West Point prepratory scholarship. out of the 4 schools that i am allowed to go to, i think i want to put down NMMI as my first choice. If anyone else is going through this program please write just so i know other people. also, if anyone has any information about NMMI please respond! thanks!

Hopefully you see the thread with Nmmi on this board several good comments there.

First, you may not think so at the moment, but CONGRATULATIONS on being selected. you probably hoped to go straight to WP, but if you want to go this is a great opportunity.

I know of a Cadet currently at NMMI, and it has been good, especially physical prep, but the academics are no slouch. Just like WP, you will have to put up with some BS, but that is on purpose, I am sure. I believe you will be well served by attending. MArion in Alabama seems to get the second most attention ..then a drop off after that -- I think ... what are the other two schools..

Look for more posts...go to NMMI.edu to get a look... barracks are plain, but not a bad little campus

Astrodude,

Congratulations! It's a great opportunity and we've heard a lot of good things about NMMI. As rty suggests, do a little searching and you'll find reliable info and even some people to contact who know about the program first hand.

congrats man! im in the same boat. At first, i was dissapointed to not get the direct-admission, but the more i think about it, the better it's sounding. I know NMMI and Marion are the main two schools for it, which do you think you'll be attending?

not sure yet. so far people have been saying NMMI is the way to go, but im going to research a bit more before i send in my form. I am excited as well. what about you, you knwo where you want to go yet?

My son (Spider, a.k.a. Philp) is trying to decide between prep offers from USNA and USMA. He will be going to NMMI either way. We visited it last spring and liked it a lot. The Supe is a Naval Academy grad and the Col. in charge of service academy preps was very helpful and impressive. Excellent athletic facilities, decent rooms. Sweet little campus.

If you search on the net you will find an "unauthorized" NMMI website where a small group of parents gathers to complain. The 'dant, Gen. Geraci, does not seem to be well-liked, but hey...that's not his job!

There are several folks on these boards who are there right now and have the best gouge on the place. I hope they check in.

spidermom,
did you and your son also look at marion? For me, it is between those two. Only problem is nmmi website never works. Visiting the two might be a good idea, but tickets to Roswell are WAY too expensive! We will have to see, i may just listen to some peoples advice and do NMMI.

I am a WP prep at NMMI this year and im going to WP this summer. If anyone has any questions you can IM me on AIM at licekillr2 or post on this. Also my friends and I have a website showing the lighter side of NMMI (we dont have to much fun but when we do we take advantage of it)
www.cadetsfor5.com

I've posted this in another thread, but I was a prep scholarship NMMI guy in 2001-02. I owe every bit of success that I've had here at the Academy to going to NMMI. I truly believe that I would not have made it through plebe year academically had I not gone to Roswell for that year, and that not having the homesickness and all during beast and plebe year was a direct result of having to deal with it all a year earlier.

NMMI's academics, especially chemistry (which is harder at NMMI than it is at WP), will get you ready for plebe year. You will meet a lot of good people, some of whom will come to the Academy with you. Living for Roswell for a year is an experience.

As always, it comes with a caveat. I hated my life at NMMI. This may have changed, but when I was there, the high school and college cadets were together, so here I was, a prior service college guy, getting told what to do by a high school sophomore. Didnt make much sense. You put up with a ton of BS there, and in all reality, probably wont enjoy very much of it because you know you're only there for a year then moving on.

If given the opportunity to go to NMMI, despite its harships, you'd be an idiot not to take it up. There is so much of a change that goes on between high school and college, and you have to mature a ton. Doing that at NMMI saves you the pain of having to do it in a much more difficult environment at WP. Cadets that come from NMMI to West Point succeed. NMMI gives you the tools you need to make it through the academy, but also gives you an idea how you can cope with the BS that comes along with military colleges.

Just my thoughts.

thanks for your thoughts eagle, and everyone else!

LC06,

We only looked at printed materials and on the web. We flew to Texas Tech to check out their ROTC program, then rented a car and drove to Roswell. There didn't seem to be anything to dislike about NMMI, so we just went with that as a "Known entity".

Funny, because Spider just got offered the USMA prep slot, we are getting all this impressive new literature from Marion and others. I kinda wish I'd had the time and resources to take hom around to a few other places. NMMI will do fine though, I'm sure.

wow screaming eagle...i hope i have the same outlook on nmmi in a couple years....but yeah...im pretty much hatin life...

we will never look at NMMI that way. especially not with the comm and rc screwin us over

NMMI come and go gentlemen, but West Point, West Point lasts forever...

Hang in there, I know what you're going through. You have a solid month left to push it through Tekut and Phipps (I think they're still there) and you'll be golden. Trust me, you will feel like this someday, I refused to even speak of NMMI for two years because I didnt want to think of it, but as soon as you realize that things worked out for you at the Academy in large part because of what you learned there, you'll apprciate it a bit.

Still, I'll never join the Alumi association...

hahahahah

yeah tekut and phipps are still here. But i actually like phipps. He's a pretty cool guy.

alumni association? hahahahaha nevar

col steil screwed me pretty hard and made me take history even though i didnt need to and now i have no credits for it...meaning i wont have 32 credits by the end of the year....HOOOOOAH!

My son just got his letter today saying he got accepted to the civil prep program. He would rather go straight to WP (wouldn't everybody) but he is excited that he will get there eventually. I am so happy for him...his dream is coming true!

I appreciate the feedback from screamingeagle on NMMI. Since we are on the west coast that will probably be his first choice. He will need to do some research to decide on a second choice, because we know nothing about the other 3 schools. Are there any cadets out there that have attended Marion, Wentworth, or Georgia?

screamingeagle gives the best first hand account..... my son had a similar situation last year.... but as a parent I have concluded it is absolutely the best thing that could have happened.

For the parents -- it also has been a more gentle 'separation' than 'direct admit' to west point FOR US THE PARENTS :)
