<p>I thought the answer was C "were" since the subject of the verb is "a large number" But the correct answer says E No error. Explanation?</p>

<p>Tricky rule: “A number of” is plural. “The number of” is singular.</p>

<p>not to mention, “village children was infected” would sound ridiculous.</p>
