WR question

Here is the question:

Traditional Jamaican music, enriched with rock, jazz and other modern rhythms from America, (were the basis for) reggae.
(A) were the basis for
(B) have been a basis for
(C) become the basis of
(D) was the basis for
(E) being the basis of

I wrote C while the answer is D. What is the difference between basis of and basis for?

Answer choice C is not primarily about the wrong idiomatic usage. The “become” in answer choice C is incorrect it should be in the past tense. The difference b/t “basis of” and “basis for” is negligible.

omg thanks :)

obviously it’s D

Yes, it is. Here is my second question. Why the phrase in the brackets is wrong?

Because our casserole was smelling (surprisingly badly) as it baked, the food science teacher came over to ask us what we had put in it

Ok, the adverb “badly” modifies the verb “smelling”, but you need to change it to “bad” (an adjective) because then it descrbes the smell. If you left it as “badly”, then it would give the impression as if your casserole was ACTUALLY smelling, not smelling in the sense that it was giving off a sense of odor, but in the sense that it was doing the smelling.

Your correct sentence should read like:

Because our casserole was smelling surprisingly BAD as it baked, the food science teacher came over to ask us what we had put in it

Always refer back to the subject of the sentence (singular/plural), not what modifies it.

Smell is a linking verb and must be modified by an adj.

Wow, no one even mentioned the subject verb issue. The subject is “music”, making D the only possible answer in that it is the only answer with a singular verb.

(There is speculation that the name “Wendy” was) the invention of J.M. Barrie who created a character by that name for his famous play Peter Pan.

A) As it is
E) The name “Wendy” by some speculation

the answer is a but why e is wrong ??

(There is speculation that the name “Wendy” was) the invention of J.M. Barrie who created a character by that name for his famous play Peter Pan.

A) As it is
E) The name “Wendy” by some speculation

the answer is a but why e is wrong ??

There is no verb.
