Traditional Jamaican music, enriched with rock, jazz and other modern rhythms from America,
(were the basis for) reggae.
(A) were the basis for
(B) have been a basis for
(C) become the basis of
(D) was the basis for
(E) being the basis of

I chose C but the correct one is D. why C is wrong ?

The answer’s D because the subject is singular- Jamaican music. The fluff in the middle is made to through you off. BEcause the subject is singular, you would choose ‘was the basis for’.

You picked C- this is wrong. If you plug your choice in, you get “Traditional jamaican music…become the the basis of.” This doesn’t make sense.

I picked D for this because Jamaican music is singular so from that you can cross off A and B. E is a gerund error. C isn’t right because “become” goes with the perfect tense and should be used as “has become”. D is correct because it makes the verb “were” singular.
