Wright State Talk 2015

@mom4bwayboy … Opps, I hope we didn’t goof.
My D made her account and submitted her app on Aug 30. The online application stated that it was open for Fall 2016 but you are right, the website says “coming soon.”

@MTmom2015 Yay! So glad things are going well

@BuckeyeBell - I was beginning to figure that was the issue. I stopped short of creating an ID and Password to find it out. Good Luck to your D.

Just wanted to mention one other cool thing about WSU. The Motion Pictures majors are also in the Theatre Department at WSU. That program is highly acclaimed and students/alumni often win awards at major film festivals. The Motion Picture students are always producing new films and are always in need of actors to be in their productions. Acting and MT majors can audition for their pick of film projects. As a sophomore, my S just wrapped up acting in his first student-produced documentary - he loved the experience. He could have done this as a freshman, but he couldn’t seem to fit any of the projects into his schedule. A major remodel/expansion of the Creative Arts Center is underway - to be finished next year - and the Motion Pictures program will be moving into a brand new space.

Wow, what a year the WSU MT kids are going to have. As part of a year-long celebration of Musicals Rock, Joe Deer, head of the MT department and director of the Musical Theater Initiative is bringing in some amazing guest artists to do concerts and workshops with students. Where do I sign?. . .

We could totally pass for students…

Like totally.

I told my D that I might be sneaking in… Also, she was in several student films last year as a Sophomore - had a lot of fun!

For anyone auditioning (or visiting) WSU in November, be sure to get tickets to see Chicago. Tickets go on sale to general public on October 11 and some shows are nearly sold out already. If you are auditioning or doing a college visit, Victoria Oleen MAY be able to work her magic and reserve some tickets, but don’t delay. The show runs over three weekends, Thursday - Sunday, October 29 - November 15.

A small bit of history regarding the founding of WSU’s theater program. Perhaps an interesting quote regarding today’s aspiring applicants “Currently, students must audition as prospective incoming freshmen to get into the theatre program. Of the 450 aspiring students from around the nation who auditioned this year, only 8 percent were accepted.”

Nice article @mom4bwayboy
Saw that the MT kids are about to have a very busy weekend with the MT Initiative. Great opportunity!

Yep. There will be a whole lot of singing’ going’ on.

“The Musical Theatre Initiative at Wright State University welcomes Pop/Rock Master Teachers Wendy Bobbitt-Cavett (Musical Director, Mamma Mia! -Broadway), Dr. Wendy LeBorgne (author, The Vocal Athlete) and Dave Clemmons (Les Miserables - B’way) for two days of intensive workshops and master classes on the art of the Rock Musical. Oct. 9 & 10.”

Sounds like it was great. S got to sing the solo in the Dave Clemmons group number… pretty cool opportunity for a freshman… esp in front of the faculty. I am constantly wow’ed by what is going on at WSU.

That is great!

My S really liked the workshops/master classes as well, but it sounds like you got more “details” out of your S @MTmom2015, than I got out of mine. We heard there was “lots of good information” from all three presenters - and a “fun” couple of days.

I asked my D about it after seeing @MTmom2015’s post - thanks! I had heard only that she got to sing for Dave & that she “had improved since high school”(he was her coach) - haha I would HOPE so! After asking for more info, she also said it was really a lot of fun with great information & that they’re looking forward to all of the other upcoming master classes.

Touring and seeing Chicago on the 30th! Super excited to see the talent at WSU, it is spoken very highly of here and I am sure the show will be great!

On a different note, do any current students/parents know if WSU MT kids are able to double major or minor and still graduate in 4 years?

S says, “absolutely not” to double major. One classmate who is minoring in foreign language came in with a year of college from another school under her belt. My S is finding it VERY difficult to manage even the required academics as a BFA (still working on getting in the required English class and he came in with a few AP credits). So far he has been cast in all three musicals since freshman fall (boy who can dance) and merely surviving the rehearsal schedules has been a challenge. Perhaps others have had a definite experience.

My Junior D said the same thing - no way to do it. She said they can only take 2 gen eds in a semester, and their schedules are very structured. Add in rehearsals, and there is very time to do anything else.

@MTmom2017 @mom4bwayboy Thank you both for the input - Though the ability to pick up a minor is great, being extremely immersed in what you love is also great!! Can’t wait to learn more about WSU

First post. Son is looking hard at WSU for MT program. He’s been accepted into the school, and gotten good scholarship money so far, (35 ACT helps!). Plan is to audition mid November and see Chicago production. We saw Peter Pan in spring was amazing. Any WSU audition tips?
