@NAtlantaStudio - S got terrific vibes from the school visit alone. Seeing the show just validated what he observed that day. Enjoy your visit. We’re off to IU that day.

@NAtantaStudio - you may be able to go to the box office at 7 and get your names on the wait list. A few people have extra tickets & it’s possible y’all could get in. Have fun on your visit!

Or talk to MS. Oleen and see if she can work her magic for tickets.

She couldn’t even help me with her magic, and she can usually do anything! She’s the one who told me to do the hour early (their shows start at 8PM) and get on the wait list for extra tickets for a friend of D’s (who didn’t end up getting to go, so didn’t try it).

Thank you for the info… Ms. Oleen told me that she wasn’t able to get tickets so we had to go ahead and arrange our trip and so there isn’t a way to wait to see if we can get tickets. I hate that we won’t get to see it but I am very confident in the high quality of the productions there. We are excited to get back on campus again.

Hello! This is my first post on CC, so hopefully it works!
I’ve just been accepted to the WSU MT program, and was wondering whether some current/future parents/students could answer some questions?
Are the dance classes streamed according to ability level? And roughly how many classes are taken a week?
Are there options to take more dance classes if wanted? Is there an extra cost? I’m a strong dancer, and I really want to keep improving in all styles.
Is music theory and piano an option in first year, or only in second year?
Approximately how many students are admitted, and how many to a class?
Does the cut program hinder a ‘nurturing’ environment, and cause much competition within students?

I’m also really interested in social, sporting groups and college life in general (I was obsessed with participation in all areas at school!) Is there a community feel about the college (I understand it is largely a commuter campus)? Are clubs etc a large part of college life? :)

My family is unable to visit the campus, and I feel like this is a great way to find out some inside information!

Hi @MTdreamer14 - yes, you can take leveled dance class. Full-time tuition covers up to 18 credit hours/semester and anything over that would cost approximately $350 per credit. So yes, you can take extra classes, but as with any MT BFA program, fitting them into your schedule can be tricky. My son is also an admitted student fro next year, so I can’t speak to the campus life, but current MT students we spoke to over multiple visits say there is PLENTY to do outside of class.

My D is currently a freshman. Have you posted on the Unified FB page? I know she is on it, and has “met” other WSU admitted students there. She is happy to answer questions (as are any of her classmates!). What I can help with: You have dance placement the day after move in day, and they put you where you need to be. You also have the option to take dance classes with dance majors - fitting them in is the hardest part due to the demanding schedule, and you would have to pay if they’re outside of your regular classes. You will dance 5 days a week (8:30AM)! They do not take music theory and piano the first year. D has 14 in her class - 7 boys & 7 girls. The cut program is in place in case students are not doing what they are supposed to be doing, not to get rid of students. If necessary, students are put on probation at the beginning of there sophomore year, and then the faculty works with them to help them improve. No one is ever surprised by this. The students are really not competitive, in fact, they are very supportive of each other - they’re all friends - and the faculty is very caring. There are sororities on campus, and the basketball team is good, although D never went to a game! There are lots of activities available outside of the theatre department, and you can be as involved as you want to be. It is a commuter campus, but the Performing Arts kids always seem to find lots to do on the weekends. The D-Lab has shows every weekend too.

*The English major in me can’t stand it - just re-read my post from earlier & typed “beginning of there” sophomore year. I promise I know their/there!!! It was almost time to drive the dance carpool & I was in a hurry!!!

@MTmom2017 when your D went to campus the first time did she fall in love with the campus or did she just really like the program. My D really likes the program but she just can’t get past the feel of the rest of the campus. I am really struggling with the whole thing.

It was definitely the program. She loved the faculty and the students immediately. I was honestly very unsure about it from the looks of the campus (especially mid-winter). It really looks better in spring/summer, when it’s green, but it’s not scenic old buildings. She has not had one second of regret or second guessing. I can’t say enough how much she loves it. They are about to begin construction of a new creative arts center so they will be getting a beautiful new state of the art building. It really is all about where your D feels at home. I’ve said this before but mine didn’t like one program that ranks high on most lists - she just didn’t have a good feeling there, but has a friend there who loves it. What is your D’s “gut” feeling about the schools she is deciding between? That’s what she needs to go with! Good luck with the decision and ask any questions you think of!

I am wondering if this is still true since this is from 2009, if you get accepted into the acting program and then want to switch to the musical theater program after the first year, does that happen. I ask that because at the master class day they said you can only audition once for the MT program and only once for the Acting program and never again. Please does anyone know the answer to this, I am guessing this would add another year to you college adventure though.
I’ll ask my S. I believe I have heard him say that even kids in the Theater Studies major have transferred into MT.
Just asked my sophomore D - she said students can’t switch from Acting to MT unless the faculty asks. She said it doesn’t happen often, but she knows of 2 former students who were asked if they wanted to switch. The Theatre Studies majors that got in either had auditioned and not gotten in at all, or hadn’t auditioned, then decided they wanted to. Adding this: she’s not sure - @mom4bwayboy’s S might know.
S agrees w/MTmom2017 - MT can transfer to Acting, but the reverse is not true. He says that some kids who audition and don’t get into MT become Theater Studies majors. THey can re-audition the following year and enter MT as freshman. Hope that helps @dramamamaproud.
