Hi guys I'm writing my first college essay and I must contemplating an idea I had. I want to write about my development as a person over the years through my failures. The thing I'm skeptical about is my portrayal of myself earlier on in the essay. I want to talk about how prideful I was in my earlier years and how my failures have shown me humility and stuff. Is that a bad idea?

It’s fine. Instead of writing it about something that took place over the course of many years, I think you should start off with a specific incident or story that was particularly significant in that development and then go back to the more general stuff. And as long as you show that you’ve changed, I don’t there’s anything wrong with being a little self-deprecating. Just focus more on the change than the negative.

I think it’s fine too and I agree with Enthouse. Just be truthful about yourself and your sincerity will be felt from your words.
