So long story short, I went through a rough time freshman and sophomore year, attended 7 different schools, placed in foster care, etc. This affected my grades tremendously but I learned so much from the experience and I've definitely grown. Would it be too "clich

Not a lot of college bound kids go through that particular experience so don’t think of it as cliche. It is your experience and very relevant as this was the situation you had to deal with while you were in high school.

I agree with BrownParent. Not cliche at all. Get it down on paper.

Okay, I was just really worried that admissions commitees often read these kinds of essays. Not my situation in particular but the same outcomes, lessons learned, etc.
Thanks for the input:)

Nice topic but be sure that you write about how it has affected and shaped you and not just a story

It’s only cliche if it’s not true. A lot of people have reasonably similar experiences in their lives…it’s okay to acknowledge that, but you can tell whether someone actually grew the way they say they did based on the way they write about it. Cliche is when you write what you think you’re supposed to write rather than what actually happened.

@halcyonheather I’m definitely going to be completely honest about the situation, and thanks for clarifying:)
