Who is required to take the writing placement exam? I got an email saying I had to take it, but I got a 5 on language and 4 on lit AP but haven't reported my AP scores so I wasn't sure if that would change things

I also got this email. However, I’m technically not a native speaker (even though English is my best language) so I’m guessing that’s why.

On their website, they state that the students they require to take the writing placement exam have profiles which indicate they may not have writing skills rigorous enough for Writing I. I’m not sure if non-native speakers constitute a majority of these students in practice. So sending in your AP English scores probably would have demonstrated your writing ability, yes. I honestly have no clue if they would retract that requirement if you sent them in now.

I got this email too and am also confused as to why I was recommended to take it since I’ve had no problems with writing in high school or on standardized tests.

I was also recommended to take it. This is different from being “required” to take it, right? I’m also confused as to why I got this email since I have no problems with English. I’ve always had an A in English and got a 5 on the ap… like the rest of you guys I see no reason why we need to take this.

If the palcement test is just recommended, then it is up to me. right? because it is not required but recommended.

Like you guys, I also got an email recommending that I take the Writing I placement exam. I see no basis for questioning my success in the course other than my being bilingual (English / Spanish).

I would recommend just taking them, it won’t hurt you or make a difference unless you really really can’t write in which case you’ll do terrible in Writing 1. There’s only two sections of the version that is for people not prepared for writing 1.

I just spoke to a lady in the writing 1 program. She said that students do not need to take the palcement test if they are just recommended. If they are requires, they should take the test. And some students are assigned to takewriting 1 course in the fall and some are assigned in spring. Students need to see advisors to find out when they should take the course.

I am pretty sure you (erkybk) should take the placement test.

stressedad,

I spoke to them and she said that students should take the test if they are required. All other students except the ones required to take are recommended to take. But it is not
compulsory and it is up to the students. Some students still take although they are recommended. But some don’t because they are not blocked for registartion. If they are required, the writing 1 course registration is blocked until it is cleared up.

Hi guys:) I also was recommended to take the Writing placement exam…however I don’t think there’s really anything wrong with my writing. Does this mean that I don’t have to take the writing placement exam and can just go directly to Writing 1?

Bears123,

As I said. I spoke to a lady in the writing 1 program. Except the students who are required to take the placement test, everybody else are recommended to take the test.
But some people still take the test although they are just recommended. But some people don’t take the test. She said that is fine not to take the test if a student is not required. I won’t take it. Even if you take it, you won’t have any propblem unless you have real writing problem because only a small fraction of students will be required to take a prep course before they take writing 1.
