Writing Preparation for SAT !!!!

I have not started doing the writing section for SAT yet but i m confused how shd i start it.I have the blue book should i just follow the instructions from the blue book and start practising or should i read any other books like The ultimate guide to sat grammar by Erica.Meltzer or the Black book by Mike Barrett.Plz suggest me what should i do.

Erica Meltzer, not even close.

I didnt understand what did u mean, should i read it or not?

I think your english is very weak @Babuji .Try to get many books for writing.

What makes you think like that @hardwork123 ,And i didnt get any advise on what book should i do but only crticism.

Post #1 said that you should read Erica Meltzer’s book.

Should be “advice” (“advise” is a verb). Contractions must also contain an apostrophe (e.g. “didn’t”).

I suggest you continue practicing basic English skills in order to build fluency, in addition to learning the strategies for the writing portion of the SAT. English is a tough language to learn.

@MITer94 Does it mean i cant score for good in SAT?

Most English-language learners I know are usually at some disadvantage on the writing (and also the reading) sections. You can definitely score well on them, but it may take more effort.

Some schools (E.g. MIT) allow you to take the TOEFL instead. You may want to check for the schools you’re applying to.

Based off my experience, the grammar book by Erica is great, and I’ll recommend the Black Book for Critical Reading tips(you could get it for free on Amazon, kindle version)

Hi Babuji,

I would also highly recommend Erica Meltzer’s SAT Writing Workbook. Seeing that it is a writing WORKbook, you need to work through it as you would a maths textbook. In addition, I agree with others that your English is a little weak. I am inferring that you are from India given that I am Indian and recognize the dialect of your username, so it is easily understood how your English can be weak. To improve this, go to your library or bookstore and buy some books written in English and read them. Doing this for a few months can dramatically improve your English.

Do not hesitate to message me or respond here if you have any questions!

Yeah, you need to work really really hard.Read silverturtle’s guide(on this website)for starters. Then move on to practice tests;use the blue book. After finishing those tests, you’ll probably be around the 550-600 range.Don’t stop.Do the practice tests from pr,barrons, kaplan, the pr 11 practice tests and the kaplan 12 practice tests. You’ll cross 700.

Thank you @joeweller and @hardwork123, i know my english is not that good but it is not that great because english is not my native language but it is not that bad either. I think if i do some practise i can score good in writing. Thanks for helping guyz.

@MITer94 I dont want to go to an elite college because i simply cannot afford that much.Actually i will be a green card holder this march 2016 and i m thinking to go into a college for march intake. Many people suggested me to go to any public college instead of an elite or a community college. If u can give me some suggestion on that I will be more than Happy,Thanks.

@Babuji I know that, for most state universities, financial aid for internationals is extremely limited since they are primarily funded through the state (E.g. taxpayer dollars). Out-of-state tuition at many of these places is already quite expensive, for example, UCLA’s in-state and out-of-state for 1 year are $13,000 and $38,000 respectively.

@MITer94 I dont think i will be cosidered as an international student for the universities becuase as i informed i will probably get a green card in march 2016 and as a green card holder i would be considered as PR of the states. If u can give me some tips on this basis on what type of college i should choose it would be great,Thanks.

@Babuji having a green card doesn’t usually qualify you for in-state tuition; usually you have to have lived in the state for X years before registering, and/or have a parent who has lived in that state for X years and be financially dependent, etc. (I don’t know all of the requirements, plus they vary by state).
