Writing question help

He was [(A)somewhat] uncertain about [(B)how to use] the new machine and [(C)asked for] [(D)more specific] instructions be sent.
The answer is C
but why is it C?

It should be "asked that", "asked for" doesn't sound right does it?

"asked for" is when you're requesting a noun.
E.g. She asked for a handphone.

"asked that" is when you're requesting a verb/action
E.g. She asked that I stay over tonight.

what about this one?

In the eighteenth century a (simple) method of musical notation (helped to make) (music more popular) than in (any century)

why is it D?

It should be "any OTHER century." It's making a comparison.

any other century and any century are basically the same thing i think..

^ there is a difference....

If you say any century, it is all inclusive and therefore doesn't make a valid comparison. If you say any other century, then the eighteenth century isn't included and thus you can make a comparison.
