(writing) Question of the day 1/30/2013 ?

About 35 percent of the world’s orange juice is produced by Florida,(comparing it with) nearly 50 percent produced by Brazil, the world’s largest orange producer.

(A) comparing it with
(B) but
(C) whereas
(D) although
(E) compared with

This is the question for today. It's obvious that A is wrong but for the others I have no clue.
Can someone explain the why BCD are wrong? and for question like this, how do you guys figure out the answer ? Thanks.

Well, there is no difficulty in crossing off the B,C and D.

Put B and read the sentence. The sentence after the conjunction BUT is actually a fragment. So it’s wrong. SENTENCES JOINED BY A CONJUNCTION MUST NOT BE SENTENCE FRAGMENTS.

C and D also have the same problem. E is the only choice which makes sense by comparing the 35% produced by Florida to 50% produced by Brazil. A is wrong because it really is “odd”. It doesn’t make any sense.
