Writing Question

Hi everyone! I have a quick writing question that I don't understand that's really bugging me. Also, Text in between the * means that's the underlined portion of the sentence.

"Civil Rights leader and author W.E.B. Du Bois was interested in drama because he believed that if you represented historical events on stage it could have a greater, more lasting effect than any exhibit or lecture."

A) if you represented historical events on stage it
B) With the events of history represented on stage they
C) events which were represented historically on stage
D) by representing historical events on stage
E) representing historical events on stage

The answer is E, but I was stuck between C and E and ultimately chose C because the underlined portion is being compared with an "exhibit or lecture," so wouldn't it be correct to compare noun with noun, using "events" rather comparing verb with noun, using "representing?"

What is at issue is which communication approach is superior to an “exhibit” or “lecture”. Du Bois concludes that it is dramatization – as for example reenactment of historical events.

Choice C makes an odd statement. Strip the modifying clause “which were represented historically on stage”, and you get “historical events have a more lasting impact”. Logically whether or not the events are communicated in the form of a drama does not change their impact. The events have already had their impact – whatever that was. The sentence with “C” is at best awkward, and ambiguous.
