If all else fails, I would like to major in creative writing at Reed College. They ask for a writing sample as part of their normal application, something with an instructor's comments. The piece that I would like to send in refers to a song that has the f word in the title. When making the copies to send in, should I censor this?

The deeper question is why you pick a song with the f word to represent you.

I think Reed is looking at it to see your abilities and writing skills. I don't think if the F-word isn't a major emphasis it will be a prop.

If the F-word is all over the paper, you might come off a lil pretentious which could be good OR bad.

My 2 cents.

It's just one time. It's an essay about how music brings people who are otherwise very different together.

The people that will be reading your essay are adults, the people that are writing the essays are almost adults. I think everyone involved can handle a little swearing if it doesn't dominate the essay.

is it "F*** THE POLICE"? If you wrote an essay about that, I'd let you into my college.

personally, i wouldnt do it, but if you feel that it represents you, use it by all means

Lol......*** the police.....awesome song

Not a problem if the context is right. If you're writing about a song that has the f-word in it, you would be wrong to remove the f-word. If the context is right, you're absolutely fine. You may as well worry about submitting an essay on Huck Finn because Huck and many others use the n-word.

Not an issue.

this applies to me too!

well instead of the f-word my essay has the word damn in it, im applying to uw-madison, should i take it out?? im verrry weary about it, but it fits perfectly into context, what should i do?

Would you say these same words to their faces if you were in front of the admissions committee for an interview? If you are trying to convince the adcoms that you are a bad mannered person with a limited vocabulary, sure, go ahead and swear in your essay.

Not an issue unless the essay is littered with it. It is a little risky though for schools other than Reed and some of the more liberal colleges.

i wouldnt use it either, but again its completely contextual
