Hi, I just got my writing score and it was a 05. First off, I thought it was on a scale of 1-6 like the website says. But it was a scale of 2-12! And there were no comments other than I took a clear position on the topic. What gives?

2 graders read your essay and give you a score out of 1-6
Then they add up those 2 scores so you get a score from 2-12

I think what he meant was how could he do so poorly that he only got a 5 even though the comments were positive.

Maybe you jumped around the task, not clear coherent paragraphs? Misplaced modifiers? Bad grammar?

^ Oh. Oops I guess I didn't read it very carefully.

Maybe it was really short, didn't answer the question asked, provided general but not specific examples, simplistic writing, a ton of grammar mistakes, ....went off topic a lot..? I don't know. I would look at an essay scoring guideline on CollegeBoard that shows what the graders look for and seeing what you didn't do. Or compare your essay (you can view it on CollegeBoard) with the ones that got higher scores and see what the difference is

Good luck!

Well, I felt really rushed. I only had writing on the first page and that was it. The topic didn't interest me at all! I know my grammar and sentence structure were good because I am strong in those areas. But I definitely had a lack of details and examples. I'm taking it again in February. Any suggestions?

^Oh I would definitely take up both pages! Even if the topic doesnt interest you, find some general examples to support your argument.
You need specific examples! I usually do intro, example from literature, example from history, conclusion. It's boring but it works.

Literature-Great Gatsby, Pride and Prejudice, any classics
History- WWI/WWII, Great Depression..etc.

As long as you use examples to support your argument and use a couple of SAT words here and there you'll get at least a 8

Rofl I used Gatsby for my SAT essay.. got a 7 on that one LOL.

Well, this was for the ACT

I feel your pain. All the time I was practicing, I would always be giving myself 8s and 9s in practice test essays. Then I got to write the real thing and boom - a six. Horrible. Can't wait for Nov 29 to see what I've done.

hahaha, I remembered after the test that, for some strange, unknown reason, I spelled "abide" as "obide". that surely contributed to my six. :D

Well the ACT prefers you to write a lot. If you fill up both pages you are almost guaranteed a 10, as long as you don't suck at writing. Just use 3 examples and wtire with good grammar and you should be fine.
