"Writing the Essay"

I'm one of the very few people (it seems like) at NYU who actually enjoyed WTE. I did, of course, come into it with already well-developed writing skills and a sense of how to write not only a school-paper-type essay, but also what would normally be considered more of an expositional/creative essay. Not that I'd really written them before, but I'd read them.

That's what WTE basically teaches you to write. Or it should, in theory. If your professor sucks or doesn't know what they're doing, the class will be awful. My professor, luckily, was amazing.

Before registering, I'd recommend asking your Orientation Leaders if they know any of the profs for the fall and who they think is good. Or the NYU LJ community is always more than ready to offer opinions on profs. Unfortunately, there is a high turnover for WTE instructors, so a lot of names are unknowns.

yeah I loved it too -- and my teacher was also amazing.

Hmmm...I took WtE w/ my explorations floor...I must say we all bonded over mutual hatred...I'm also a Sternie, so we had Business and its Publics...and it'll come back to haunt you, because you come back to your third essay in Oral Comm...lovely

I did well though, despite all the complaints...A- in WtE and A in B&P

are the essays you write in-class timed essays, or out-of-class essays? (for stern)

How does WTE work for Explorations kids? I understand that you have to take it with the rest of your floor, but what if you are in Stern or Tisch or something...do you take a CAS WTE or A Stern/Tisch WTE? Also, when regestering for classes, how will we know which WTE to sign up for?

Thanks.

only a handful exploration floors have wte essay together. unless your in CAS, you take two WTE's. 1st semester a general one, 2nd semester a school specific one. I think film and tv people take a different one first semester too though?

they're all out of class except for the 1st day essay in which they guage your writing ability

is it possible to place out of WTE with either english language or english lit?

Nope, can't place out.

Do Gallatin students have to take "Writing the Essay"? The first year program requires two writing seminars, but I've seen no mention of WTE being a requirement (which worries me, b/c I applied to the Writing New York floor of Goddard).

Which teacher is suggested for this class....so far i'm enrolled for an instructor named Staff, Tba...................can anyone tell me what he/she is like?

thats not a name, tba- to be assigned.

thanks legionaire....it was written in an awkwards manner....if it said Staff TBA or tba, but i was written 'Staff, Tba'...Thanks....I'm in summer mode now....makes sense, but my mind isn't thinking clearly.

hahahaha.... you'd be surprised, a lot of people do have weird names like that... I've heard of a "kerby pickle" lolz

Don't take writing the essay:science, regardless of how big a science geek you are. Unless perhaps, if you end up with Andrea McKenzie, or Helen somebody... Most WTE :science sections are taught by Benedick Turner.... just stay away from him....

Yea, I'm a Stern student, i'm not supposed to take any of those specialty classes....but yea, I know many Asian names, esp. Indian names can be hard to pronounce, so that is what I initially thought, lol.

what’s the second essay assignment for regular WTE?? is it still deepening??!
thanks!

no its the reckoning essay

…sounds terrible.
The deepening essay was tough enough.</p>

WTE = W.T.F.
