Writing your OWN letter of recommendation

So my friend wrote her OWN letter of recommendation, signed a fake name on it, and sent it off to Dartmouth..
She said it was just because she didn't have time to have someone else write it..but I still think it it completely unfair, and so my question is, is this common? For peer recs, is it normal for people to write their own? Because that just seems totally useless and not fair.

I have heard of a few people doing it, they didnt get caught or anything.

Extremely unfair--period.

unfair unfair unfair unfair

well. what can you do?

That is such crap though! I mean its not a TEACHER letter..but still. Wouldn't they be able to tell somehow?? It makes me SO mad.

Somehow, I want to accuse banana for being the one who's doing this because s/he just joined the site (look at number of posts) to protect privacy....

***? Wow...what has the world come to.

hahah thats great!! i love it! way to think on ur feet man

Nope its not, but I can see why you'd think it is me though..I have been coming on here just to look at posts but I never had any reason to actually make a post until now.

That is disgusting. Part of it is being able to find somebody you have affected in some way who you would feel would write it for you. I was written an incredible one by a former classmate of mine, and I feel it is cheapened by the possibility that I could be one of many who has enough of an ego to write the type of wonderful thing written about me about myself.

lol, that's life :P Oh well what can we do, better to just mind our own business and focus on ourselves.

Well not really, because it does affect us - that person could be taking someone's spot who really deserved it!
What a low thing to do. But I agree that it will almost certianly never be caught.

There's nothing we can do about it. We all want to get in to a great school, but it's not worth selling your soul over.

Why exactly would you want to be friends with someone like that? I'd ostracize her.

This is part of the reason why letters of rec are kinda stupid in my opinion.

Hah, I had considered writing my own, prefacing that I had written it, and signing my name, just to be unique, however I suppose I would not have been all that unique....

whatev, mine would have been horrible if i had written it. my friend showed me the one he wrote me, and it was stellar.

Their loss.

Ugh that's no fair... and to dartmouth no less...

Yeah if I had written my own it would not have been NEARLY as good..but I know somebody who did that last year.. but it wasn't a fake name..though she didn't tell the persons name who he signed, which, in a way, is worse.
