i was wondering: is it a good idea to submit a writing portfolio of some sort with your application? i'm going to be focusing on English -- so as to show my passion for it -- throughout my application most likely. and i feel as if the portfolio will help. what do you guys think?

stasis,

If you do decide to send in a writing sample, my advice is to choose your submission wisely. You don't want to be known around the office as that girl with the inch thick folder because she sent in a massive portfolio.

Keep in mind that counselors are reading hundreds (close to 1000) applications in a very concentrated amount of time. There is only so much time they can spend reading any one application. Working in the office as a student, I'm trying to remember if any of the counselors commented positively on writing portfolio submissions. I just remember some of the good natured groaning that went on when a student sent in what seemed to be every single written assignment she ever had in high school.

I would advise against it. As jacinth very nicely summarized, admission officers already have a lot to read. Unless there is a writing supplement (there isn't, only an athletic/art/music supplement) then I wouldn't include it. Instead, focus on writing an outstanding essay.

Are you sure? Haha sorry to push the point but like stasis I'm very focused on writing--my alleged talent is sort of my biggest selling point--and I feel that my application would be lackluster without a significant nod toward that aspect of me.

Since you'll be interviewing long before the application is due, you could ask your interviewer for advice! Mention that you want to respect the admissions committee's time but that you also want to highlight one of your strengths.
