Does anyone know how WashU weighs GPA, SATs/ACTs in comparison to portfolio for the Sam Fox School of Visual Arts and Design?
I hope they don’t consider stats as much, but they say that they don’t lower criteria for Sam Fox. I’m applying regular decision for comm design or photography, how about you!
@aych1686 i applied ED for comm design and was deferred. Fingers crossed though
@spatel16 good luck! do you know your weaknesses/strengths?
@aych1686 My weaknesses are definitely my gpa and sats. I went to the WashU table at National Portfolio Day and the reviewer said my portfolio was strong so I hope it balances out the soft spots on my app. I post my art on my tumblr (www.shreyabpatel.■■■■■■■■■■) if you want to check out my work (I’d also love to see yours).
@spatel16 wow! you’re portfolio is amazing, really humbling work! My portfolio should be done by the 10th so remind me to share the link when I have everything uploaded mine’s mostly photography, sketches, and graphic designs, no paintings or anything. I heard that Washu takes it into a lot of consideration when someone attends national portfolio day so that’s a strength for you. I never got the chance esp cause I just realized they had a comm design program 2 weeks ago! My stats are 3.37 (3 APs, some honors, all accelerated) and a 2180 sat. My gpa is way lower than washu’s standards so i hope that my ECs and portfolio balance out!

@spatel16 can i get feedback on my portfolio? thanks!!
@aych1686 Hey! I love the variety of work in your portfolio, especially the graphic art and photography. Your graphic work is really strong and I think since you’re applying as a communications design major it’s a strength for you. I would say maybe try experimenting with different mediums in your traditional art. Most colleges tend to have foundational courses for all freshmen art students, so it’s nice to show that you can work in a variety of mediums and succeed in the fundamental courses. You have a great sense of space in your photography so I also suggest taking aspects of composition and space from your photography and applying it to your drawings to create more dynamic compositions. You can draw well, your work displays that, but one thing that I find really separates good artists from great ones is the ability to compose, so possibly try doing a piece with an original composition/subject matter? Also one last thing, I would address background in your drawing pieces. Let me know if you want anymore feedback or if you have any for me! And haha sorry I only really addressed your drawings here, thats the area I have the most experience in
@spatel16 thank you!! since i can only submit 20 pieces, i’m making my portfolio mainly photos/graphics, so which ones would you suggest? i have the photos but not the graphics picked out, so let me know which ones stood out to you, like a top 5. thanks, i really appreciate this!!
Hey guys! I’m applying too, already submitted, obviously. I’m taking two subject tests in february (world history and math 2) that’ll hopefully fix up my app. out of curiosity, what were your numbers @spatel16 ?
@sulkyle98 yeah you’re doing DMD too, i told you on that thread @spatel16 what are yours, i’m sure if you were deferred they must be somewhat near washu’s standards
@sulkyle98 @aych hey guys, honestly my scores a lot lower than wash u’s standards but i’ve made my peace with it lol
GPA - 3.53
SATs - 2070
SAT 2s (from what I submitted) - US: 700
AP’s - US 3, Euro 3, Drawing 5
I’ve taken all honors throughout high school with the exceptions of typical classes like art and gym, and then also I took college prep pre calc and calc. I’m taking AP latin, art (design), and english this year. Barely studied throughout high school and just did well enough to pass. Took the SAT’s twice and only studied for a day before each one. Finally at the start of senior year I realized everyone else was applying to college too and I probably wasn’t going to be that “one exception” and decided to get my shit together. Got a 4.1 first semester and had more fun than any other year. Regret not working hard a ton but like i said I made my peace with it haha
@spatel16 not bad! they’ll like the upward trend. @aych1686 @spatel16 did you guys show ‘demonstrated interest’?
yupp! decisions come out soon!
