I've been accepted to WUSTL on a scholarship for which I only have to pay about $8000 a year. My other choice is MIT, for which I wouldn't get any financial aid.

I want to do pre-med, and having visited both universities, I think both have great pre-med programs. I want to major in Biology or Biomedical Engineering while studying Philosophy, Psychology, and Anthropology.

They both have an abundance of activities and clubs to participate in and relatively active Greek life, which I hope to participate in (although I do like MIT's greek life more because from what I saw it is more academically focused). I'm also a swimmer and both swim teams look great. The only difference is that WashU's swim team requires more time to be put into it and they are more successful.

Does anybody have any advice on deciding between the two schools? Statistics, facts, and links to websites about the success of pre-med students at either school would be greatly appreciated.

Wash U is famous for its premed program. For medschool you need GPA, MCAT and lots of money. I think you are likely to do much better GPA and money-wise at WUSTL. Both will prepare you well for the MCAT.

Daughter attends hot-shot northeast LAC. Her twin brother helped us move her in before he started at WashU. While we were walking in college town, we ran into very well-respected President of said hot-shot northeast LAC.

We introduced ourselves, introduced twin brother, and well-respected Pres asked twin brother “so where will you be matriculating?” Twin brother said “Washington University in St. Louis.”

Pres immediately replied “they have the best biology department in the country.” Although twin brother blushed and said “I probably won’t even take a biology course”, this ‘exchange’ has remained with me this past year, as people ask me about WashU.

BME has a great rep, and I have the utmost respect for this LAC Pres; he is a premier educator. If he jumps in that WashU has the best bio dept. in the country, that’s good enough for me.

Might not be good enough for you, but there’s my anecdote for the day! Good luck to you, shaocc. :)

Go with WashU. The money happens to make it attractive, but I guarantee that MIT has nothing on WashU when it comes to pre-med, and WashU has a more well-rounded humanities curriculum.
Plus, you will love it. You can’t go wrong.
