WUSTL vs Purdue vs UVA for CS

got in to purdue and uva soe cs
want to be a swe- will graduate in 3 yrs both schools
both around same price after aid ± 3k
which should i go? never been to purdue
uva campus was ok
is purdue cs good?- my application was last minute and i still got in

Purdue is very strong for CS! Congrats on your acceptances!

Are you sure you can graduate in 3 years? It can be be difficult to graduate early, regardless of how many AP credits you get because of course sequencing. You may have to take classes in the summer and forgo working, which could bite you in terms of being employable.

If you have any Purdue specific questions I’m happy to try to answer them.

i would actually graduate from uva in 2 1/2 , i from va and took dual enrollment, theyre 1:1

where purdue cs grads would funnel into? for example, i know uva/ vtech cs grads usually find jobs in the DMV area and/or work for the government, would purdue geographically funnel into chicago?

also i just got accepted into washu stlouis- so please help me see pro/con uva soe, purdue, washu stlouis cs

@Candito_Bandito it’s hard to read your posts. Please remember that CC members are expected to use Standard English when posting on the Forum. Avoid using text-speak please. Look up the first destination survey for Purdue. It will list top companies and locations for where CS grads land.

Purdue has one of the most extensive job fairs in the country. Students go all over the country and are definitely not constraint to any one location.
I have a chem E and she’s worked in GA, OH, PA, and CO while in college for co-ops and internships.

I just got into gtech.

Congratulation. You have some great options. If you’re looking for some advice you have to share some more info like what are you looking for in a school? Major? Location? Size?

For CS it’s hard to top GT but it’s not all about rankings. All your choices are good.

GT is in the middle of Atlanta. Very urban but a defined campus. Academically it can be intense but that’s to expected at any top school. Purdue has a great reputation for STEM but is not urban.

I’ve researched that Purdue is academically intense. All questions related to purdue CS.
1)Grade inflation is out of the picture. Is getting into grad school harder at purdue?
2) I’ve also read that the reason purdue has a high acceptance rt is because many students get weeded out. Will many of my peers at purdue drop out/transfer/ change majors by junior year?
3) Because of this academic intensity, will graduation suffice for employment or do most people who graduate excel very well academically?
4) Because of its nonurban environment, are internships harder to get?
5) With a challenging academic curriculum, why is purdue still known as a party school?

I’ll try to answer the best I can, but note that my D is a chemical engineering major, so I don’t have direct experience with CS other than through D’s friends. Hopefully someone else will have more CS knowledge and respond.

  1. My D knows only one person who is struggling to get into grad school, but she is looking into a fully funded PhD in micro biology. Everyone else that was grad school bound has had plenty of acceptances.

  2. Purdue does NOT have a weed out culture. The CS acceptance rate is actually quite low. The weed out has happened before students have gotten to campus. At freshman orientation, it was clearly articulated that gone are the days of look left, look right, those people won’t be there and that it’s been replaced with look left, look right, those people will be sitting beside you at graduation.

  3. I’m not sure what you are asking? My D only has one friend still looking for a job and that’s only because he’s being super picky. Everyone else is employed.

  4. Purdue’s career services center is EXCELLENT! Purdue brings the most companies to campus for their job fairs than almost any other school in the country (they vie with Georgia Tech for the honor every year). Internships and co-ops are plentiful.

  5. Is Purdue still considered a party school? That hasn’t been my D’s experience at all. The beauty of Purdue is it is big - a city unto itself, and everyone can find their people. If you want to find a party, I’m sure it’s there. Plenty of school spirit around sports too. But there is also a vibrant arts scene, a thousand clubs, lectures, academic clubs, etc…

From friends, I think GT and Purdue are more similar academically than different.

GaTech is likely more intense than even Purdue.

UVA engineering is also no picnic.

UVA CS is uncapped whereas Purdue is capped and GT seems to miraculously do a great job managing their CS enrollment.

In terms or difficulty: GT > Purdue > UVA

But UVA has intangibles… Nice campus, great social life…

What is purdue cs admissions rt? Is the overall admissions rt still around 50%?

Does having less than 4 years at a college for undergrad look weird on a resume?
Is taking out a total of ~70k in student loans worth it for a cs degree because of its potential payback?

Last I heard the CS acceptance rate was 20%.

Taking out debt for a CS degree is completely unnecessary!

And no, plenty of students graduate early.
