wuts so good about Indiana?

I was looking at schools, and I had been considering Notre Dame. But, I realized....what is there to do in Indiana? The school is probably in the middle of nowhere with nothing exciting around.

Am I right or wrong? If I'm wrong, then what is there to do around Notre Dame?

You're right, there really isn't anything to do in South Bend.

The ND spin is that this actually enhances on-campus life/activities and adds a ton of school spirit, which translates into alumni loyalty, which means you'll always be "taken care of", yada yada...

Northwestern huh? Perhaps it is best not to troll other boards, especially when your information is at best from one campus visit.

I graduated from Notre Dame this year and while South Bend isn't the most hoping place, there is plenty to do on-campus let alone off campus. We are also only 1.5 hours from Chicago, so you have a large city nearby so you get all those benefits.

Honestly, if you are picking your school based on location, people probably wouldn't go to Notre Dame. However, there are many good reasons to go to Notre Dame, it just depends on what is important to you.

I am sorry nutmeg, I don't usually call people out, but I think if you look at your post you would agree it is a tad bit trollish. If you can show me that your opinion comes from more experience than my years of living in South Bend, I will apologize. I just disagree with your post and I do not believe it to be accurate. Also, just looking through your old posts, I see this isn't the first time you have slammed ND. You picked NU over ND, great, let it go!

EDIT: As for what there is to do, it is like a lot of other schools in a lot of ways. Some students go to Chicago, others go to clubs, bars (when you are 21), parties on campus, sporting events, lectures (yes, I did that, lol), movies on campus, lots of things. We honestly have about as much that we can do as any other college student, we just are in a smaller city. We still have theatre, malls, movie theatres, and AMAZING sports. What is it that you want to do?

I am sorry if that sounded trollish, but I pointed out how it can be a plus as well. As you said, it's all about what the individual wants.

I have relatives in South Bend; one of them was a tour guide for decades. I've been there three times and I even stayed there for five days on one visit. I begged them to sell ND to me, since I knew how much it would mean to my family if I went there. I guess you could say that I was strongly biased in favor of ND, but I knew there was no way I could stay there after my multiple visits.

I have no personal vendetta against Notre Dame - it's not as if they rejected me. However, I'm simply appalled by how overrated it is in my local community. I discuss my negative experiences at ND only because I wonder whether people love it in spite of all this.

I should stop "trolling" on the ND forum (if 2 negative posts merit the term). Peace out, people.

I wouldn't have said anything if I hadn't have seen other negative posts on the Northwestern board as well as several other boards. Perhaps it is a case of cognitive dissonance given what you have described, I am not sure. I just feel there is a lot more to South Bend than what you described.

You are welcome on the ND board, I don't want to scare you away. It is good to have dissenting opinions, and as I said in my PM, I may have been a bit too harsh on you here.

haha i can't wait till i get to the point where everytime someone says anything bad about ND i get extremely defensive

not that you got overly defensive, it's just pride and i love it! i'm soooo excited! lol

lol, you will get there, and I did apologize to nutmeg.

Hmm...Indiana, let's see....ummmm, Notre Dame is there! Yep...that's pretty much it. But that's good enough for me. :) South Bend is pretty boring, but you can get anything you need and I promise you, you would find it very hard to get bored at Notre Dame.

Coming from 10 minutes outside of New York City, I can tell you that I'm not exactly impressed with Indiana. In fact, I rather dislike the state, from what I've seen. It's just not my style, and South Bend is just no substitute for the city I live in or The City (Manhattan). But it gets the job done. Food, shopping, movies, bars, parties, it's there, just without the energy and excitement of some other places. You might not like it, but you probably wouldn't dislike it much, it just sort of is.

If you're the outdoorsy type like me, there are a lot of fun things in Indiana.

Indiana and South Bend seem to prop up many times when kids try to explain why there are not choosing to attend ND. Not for me, I think that its location is something that makes Notre Dame... Notre Dame. When I was there, it was obvious that the student life was centered on campus. With so many people on campus it naturally breeds that family atmosphere that has come to define ND.

ND wouldn't be ND if it was in the middle of Indianapolis , and life was centered around night clubs and other OFF CAMPUS activities.

And if you really need to go and be in a big city, just trek up to Chicago....but when you need an oasis from the big city life all you need to do is retreat to the utopia of Notre Dame.

JMHO

i agree with tim... my sister goes to columbia college in chicago and it's not even a campus--she hates it... you don't get that college experience, she lives in more of an apartment than a dorm... for me, i would rather have those dorm parties and the campus life... you have your whole life to do whatever you want outside a college campus, but while you're spending your 4 years in college, wouldn't you want to get the full college experience? i would at least... notre dame is the perfect "campus college," to me...

mrchipmunk90, don't go to ND. who asks a question like that? and you probably wouldn't get in by spelling "what's" 'wuts'

i love the pride but let's not get malicious here... lol
