Here’s a little different opinion…Go to the school where you can get the highest GPA, as you will need it for med school. There is a great pre-med discussion board towards the bottom of the main discussion page. You may want to ask there.

Kirtip,
Just wanted to add my 2 cents. UM is a great school no doubt about it - many family members have gone there. But it is big all the way around. Does that matter to you? There is such a size difference between UM and X.

My son is also down to two schools likely with Xavier being one of them. Xavier I think has a more nurturing campus. Is that important to you? The campus is more contained and your life there is more campus-oriented (though sounds like the kids/school arrange trips into town for events). UM is more about the school AND the town.

Re: sports, there is nothing like Xavier during basketball season. :)

Academics is surely most important. But I see two totally different “styles” in UM and X otherwise. Where do you think YOU fit considering things outside of academics???

UMich of course. Its academic crushes everyone else

Thanks everyone, especially abasket. Your posts really helped.

I know they are different styles, and I just cant figure out which one is more me. Im visiting michigan soon so maybe that will help??

And why exactly is michigan so much better academically?

Because virtually every department in every single school at Michigan is rated among the top 20 in this country. Many are in the top ten and quite a few are in the top 5. There just is no comparison overall between the other three schools you’ve mention and U-M when it comes to academics for the most part. Michigan is just significantly stronger.

Michigan without a doubt.

Ok, Im gonna shift gears here.
Which school would help me get to medical school the best?
Xaviers program seems very personalized and well known in the area. They have an 80% acceptance rate to medical school. Michigan has a great program as well. What do you all think?

Medical schools are more interested in GPA and MCAT results, so it won’t really matter where you go to college, as long as the college you go to is well respected, and all of the schools on your list are were respected.

Im from Michigan also and I think you should go with Umich AA. And from your small catholic highschool with graduating class of 120, i’m guessing Richard AA? I know you can can’t go wrong with Jesuit but Michigan seems like the better choice if you are more independent and like to take the initiative. If not, go to a school where they take care of you and guide you more.

Yep thats right Gabriel Richard Ann Arbor. Where do you go?

And thanks for your input! Ill take it into account. I liked the way you put the initiative differences.

bumptastic

This notion that GPA is the only thing that matters to Med Schools is true, but what also matters is WHERE you earn that GPA. I know Cal State students with close to 4.0 GPAs get rejected while UC students with as low as 3.2’s get in. So I reiterate- MICHIGAN>

Does xaviers 80% med school acceptance rate when compared to michigans 65% mean much?

Medical school placement rates are meaningless if GPA/MCAT results of applicants are not taken into account. Michigan encourages all students interested in medical school to apply. As such, you will have many 2.0-3.2 students with sub 30 MCAT scores applying to med school. Such students stand very little chance of being admitted into any med school. Many private universities will seriously discourage applications to medical school for students with GPAs and MCAT scores lower than a certain point.

so which do you think would be the better enviornment for a pre med? the one that lets subpar students apply? or the one that guides them not to?

I am from Indiana and I picked MSU over U of M and Wisconsin- Madison. State is great.

You paid OOS prices to go to MSU instead of IU or PU?

Wilsta10 whats your major?

uofm for sure

^Why did you bump such an old thread? I wonder where the OP decided to go.
