xfer strategy

So Jr. enrolled in a local CC this fall.
he was recently informed he got accepted off the waitlist at our State U for January.
He’s thinking he wants to go in Jan.
His initial plan was to do a yr at CC and apply to some more desirable schools to attend next fall.
The question is, if he wants to xfer out of State U, and shoot for some better schools,
would he be better off doing the yr at CC,and then xferring? Or do the fall at CC, and the spring at State U?
I think he should stay at CC for the yr, but I’m open minded about it.
I told him it would be hard to justify xferring out of state U after what would amount to only a few weeks.
Anyone have any experience with this?

IMO, if state u isn’t is “dream” school, wait the full year. Apply and transfer to the right school If state us is where he wants to go, then go for it. No reason to transfer twice.

Each time your kid transfers, he has the potential for courses NOT to be accepted towards a degree at his new school. Does it make sense to do this?

Plus…it would be better for him to have a great academic track record at one place…as opposed to hoping around from school to school, in my opinion.

I’d suggest he wait. Really if he transfers now, he won’t even be using his courses and GPA from this CC at all…

And then if he wants to transfer for fall…again, he will be in the same boat.

If your son is going to stay at the CC, he will be best served staying the 2 years and getting an associates. You should look to see what 4-year schools have articulation agreements with the CC. Articulation agreements would definitely make the transfer process easier.

Unless he has a guaranteed transfer someplace and is just at the local CC so he could be in school, if he transfers after one year, most of the weight will still be on his high school transcript and scores.

Make sure it is okay if he takes the CC course before he enrolls in January.

Why do you think he would get into “better” schools if he seemingly didn’t get into his state school nor others as he is going to CC?

I would do CC this semester if okay with college and then jump in wholly to the State School.

As the mom of a transfer I would encourage him to stay at CC for a full year. He can strategically plan his classes so they transfer to whatever his top choice would be. Also, my daughters new school did not offer her merit aid even though she met all the grade guidelines because all the credits weren’t coming from one school.

The kid is a late bloomer. He’s young for his grade, and he’s local for a number of reasons, including the fact that we wanted to see some better decision making from the lad before we sent him off. He was waitlisted at State U but got into a number of legit universitys as well. So his early hS grades were bad, great sr yr. a solid prep yr at CC should polish him up a bit to generate some options…i mean he wont be going HPY or anything, but i’d like him to at least be able to go to a scholl for a reason other than “that was the only place i got in”
