Does Xiggi say anything about study vocabulary for the test?

he said don't study for it

I am a student preparing for the SAT test on the 28th of January. I have an accomodation due to ADD that will allow me time on a half on each section. I'm trying to score perfectly, even though my tendency for human error makes that a pretty unrealistic goal. I've done a lot of preparation (over the summer and during school) and am in pretty good shape, but I seem to have hit plateaus on CR and Math sections. I usually understand all of the math questions but I keep making stupid mistakes. Do you any of you know an effective method for checking work on the math? These are just easy miscalculations, usually, or misreading the problem. On Critical Reading, sometimes I just can't understand what the reading comprehension questions are asking and what the ETS wants. This might be just a problem of aptitude and human error, but I was wondering if any of you had any specialized strategies that might employ my uncommon advantage.

hey stewie!

I found myself in a very similiar situation. I knew the math but I kept making mistakes. Here's what I suggest:

Read every question slowly and twice. (especially if you have time and a half, there is no reason to rush on reading the question).

Take practice tests and review the ones you got wrong. Look at all the ones you get wrong for patterns. The SAT tries to trick you on certain problems / don't be fooled.

Of course if you have extra time go back. But don't go back immediately to your answers / instead reread the question and make sure you are answering what they are asking.

Hope that helps.

As far as Vocabulary goes, I recommend Flocabulary - www.flocabulary.com. It defines SAT Vocab words in hip-hop music. More fun than flashcards. :)

Thanks. I think that will help a lot.

Does xiggi have any idea how many questions on the SAT can be safely skipped without risking your score?

It varies from time to time. You can't skip any on the math; I've rarely heard of a curve on that. You could probably skip one critical reading question, but even that isn't always a safe bet. On nearly all SATs there has been a slight curve for the writing section, so you might be able to skip questions.

But if you're trying to score perfect, you really shouldn't plan on skipping anything when you're probably going to get a couple wrong out of sheer human error.

whats ur favorite online sat prep tool for math?

Hi everyone. Hi xiggi. I have been an SAT tutor for more than 20 years and now run a small company that offers both classes and private tutoring. Xiggi - I have read some of your reponses to questions and agree with most of what you offer. You should be commended for the time you commit to this venture. You have said many times over what I cannot say to my clients about Kaplan and Princeton Review. You may find it funny that a VERY MAJOR Kap executive actually sent his daughter to my company for tutoring. When I aksed him why, he said "Kaplan knows what it is." What does that tell you? PR is just evil in the way it lies and misleads with false hopes and false guarantees. Anyway. Preparation for SAT should not be taken lightly. Every former PR tutor thinks he/she is an expert. Every adult who can buy a prep book also thinks he/she is an expert. The truth is that the SAT is a beatable, coachable test - if you think like a test maker. I would be glad to share some ideas with college hopefuls through this forum. Since I am new, perhaps someone can advise me if there is a better place within this website - or outside - that I can offer advice. Yours truly - The SAT Guy

Generally not a good idea - since even purely random guessing is a break even situation and rarely do you need to make a random guess. Educated guessing is the best answer.

Satguy

Thanks for the nice words. As far as the best place to help students, this IS the perfect forum. One of the best ways is to participate in QA and help others read about different approaches.

On a side note, I am not surprised that an executive of Kaplan might seek the help of a bona fide professional. The problem with standardized classes is that they have to adjust the pace and contents to the lowest denominator. My take has always been that, after a rather generic review of the SAT format and contents, it is important to focus on individual strengths and weaknesses. That is why I have campaigned hard for individual assessments and practices. However, as you may have noticed in my past posts, I also feel that good tutors can help students unlock their true potential by identifying correctly the nature of individual weaknesses.

As someone said, there are many different ways to reach the top of a mountain. Nobody possesses the magical key to help everyone ace the test, but it is possible to get pretty darn close. It only takes work and dedication. :)

I built my company on that exact premise. Individual assessment, taught by expert teachers who can adjust he curriculum to meet the individual needs of students. It's nice to find someone who understands that.

Xiggi, I'm sure this has been asked (and subsequently dodged) before: how did YOU do on the SAT's?

"and subsequently dodged"

and will forever remain something for me to know and for you to find out. The only scores you need to worry about are your own. :)

Xiggi, I have been having trouble getting satisfaction from Mike the Grammatix guy. He has never send the book I ordered. He responded once to my email but then, again ,never sent the book. His phone mail is always full. I know you endorsed him Is this guy OK?????

you automatically get the .pdf so its not like your getting off empty handed if the book never reaches you via the mail...

Yeah, you get the ebook instantly after purchase.

guys i'd like to have your suggestions on websites that have a good SAT vocabulary lists, preferably those most commonly appeared on the SAT. Web site please since I am asking this for my friends. Thanx a lot
