Yale and MIT Chances (All Criticism enjoyed!)

@wormholes Thankyou!, I already have a couple safeties lined up, that are both actually in the top 15 schools for engineering XD, but thank you for your response overall!

@wormholes I disagree with your statement that most of those schools’ applicants have mostly 34+ ACT scores. Almost no schools (with the exception of MIT and CalTech) have an average act score of admitted students above a 33. Therefore, it is unlikely that most applicants would have 34+ scores.

I hate how CC in general skews people’s statistical perceptions of admitted students/applicants.

OP, you truly have a shot at all of these colleges.

@ap012199 I’d have to disagree with you. Most applicants to places like Yale/Harvard/Stanford definitely have 34+ scores. All of them? No. But the vast majority.

I’m not trying to skew OP’s perceptions, but it’s better to be cautious than overly optimistic. It’s better to be safe than sorry. OP does have a chance, but I’m not going to say that they have a great shot, simply because of how tippy-top these schools are.

@wormholes I said with the exception of MIT and CalTech.

@ap012199 I know, I saw that after I made my post hahah. Fixed now.

@wormholes I don’t follow your logic. Why is the average ACT score for Standord and Yale a 33 if the vast majority of applicants apply with 34+ ACT scores? If this were the case, one would think that their averages would be at least 34.

@ap012199 The 75th percentile ACT at Stanford is a 35. Doesn’t mean it’s the average, but your chances are definitely going to be better with a 35 vs. a 31, which is the 25th percentile.

@wormholes Yes, but that has nothing to do with what you said earlier about the vast majority of applicants applying having a 34+. That just doesn’t statistically make sense considering the average is bellow a 34.

I know you didn’t say that the OP will get denied because of his test scores, but I am certain that if he does, it will be because of a reson besides his ACT score.

@ap012199 Okay.

Unless you have a hook, a 35 ACT is at least 1x a 34 - that’s significant

@wormholes sorry if I came off harshly; I have no intentions of being rude.

@ap012199 Not a problem haha, I just didn’t see a point in continuing to argue back and forth :slight_smile:

wow just came back to that… It’s all perspective based y’all are both right
