being african american will certainly help you… plus your gpa is on an upward trend, which is great. yale and brown are still reaches though. the rest are looking good.

He’s posted 1 truly concrete stat (APUSH score) and you’re already telling him that he’s got a great chance at most of his schools?!

You’ve gotta have an SAT/ACT and some SAT2s in order to get a reasonable chance. What I can tell you is this: the GPA is on the low side for most of the schools you’re looking at; however, it is in an upward trend and you also are a 1st gen African-American so that will help you out.

Even considering your URM status

Yale: Huge Reach (most likely reject)
Brown: Huge Reach (most likely reject)
Vassar: Large Reach
Bard: Reach
Grinnell: Reach (getting very selective recently, 26% acceptance rate this year)
UMD: Match
Macalester: Low Reach
Occidental: Low Reach/High Match

You definitely need a safety.
