Hey ! I just wanted to know what I could do to improve and what colleges and universities you would recommend for my given stats. I would also like to be chanced for Yale , even though I know its a long shot.

Stats:
Currently a junior
4.2 weighted gpa
AP World-4
currently taking APUSH ( I am taking most rigorous classes offered)
NHS member
French NHS member
French Club(treasurer)
Buisness Club
have taken all the honors courses my school has offered so far(junior)
I am aiming for 1900+ on SATs which I will take in Jan.(I know I need wayy higher)
SAT 2 World- 620 (might re-take sometime in future)
SAT 2 Chemistry- 530

I am also in top 12% of my class(private school) and some majors I am thinking about are Chemistry and/or Political Science.
Thanks for the input!

Not going to lie. Your stats are a bit low. But you never know with these things so take all of this with a grain of salt. Try the ACT. I would work hard. Write great essays and still try if you really want it. I’m in the same shoes, but I still applied.

Yale admissions, like admissions for all highly selective schools, is not just about numbers. BUT you ideally need to have-at the least-competitive numbers for your GPA and ACT or SAT in order to be considered as a serious candidate unless you have a major “hook” e.g. Olympian, Intel finalist, winner of a national art/music competition, or other unique attributes or unusual accomplishments which would contribute to the diversity of the incoming class (and even then, you still need somewhat competitive numbers.) Yale to the best of my knowledge does not publish the average GPA for admitted students but they do publish the 50% band for the SAT and ACT:

1995/1996 SAT (25%-75%) 1300-1470/1600 [1950-2250/2400] *
2010/2011 SAT (25%-75%) 1410-1590/1600 2120-2390/2400

What many individuals, especially parents such as myself, don’t realize is how high that 25-75% SAT band has shifted over the past 15+ years. This upward shift makes entering the serious applicant pool more difficult for a student even before the adcom begins to consider other major application factors such as the essays and extracurriculars.

As to your chances? Probably not too good at the moment. A 1900/2400 SAT score would be lower than the 25% band for the SAT over 15 years ago and over 200 points lower than 25% band for the class of 2015 (2010-2011). The extracurricular activities that you have listed are fairly limited. You have a great GPA plus time to hone your standardized test scores and develop depth in your extracurricular activities to become a stronger candidate for whichever colleges you decide to apply to. Good Luck!

Don’t get too freaked out at everything people are saying. A lot of growth occurs throughout the junior year, the summer, and into senior year. You’re hot even done with first semester yet. Try and get the best grades you can during this year; it’ll bolster your GPA and probably help class rank. As for your scores, you have some time. Study pretty hard for the SATs (I recommend Princeton review and even a class if you can get 1). Learn how the tests work, and then rock them. I took the test Jan of my junior year, didn’t do super great, and was kind of upset. Then, in June, I took them again (didn’t really study) and went up 230 points. Just 6 months of academic growth, familiarity with test, etc. Helped THAT much. G’luck
